| Homeseeker, I can hear the frustration in your voice. I was panicing deciding how I was going to tell my doc I wouldn't do Low-Fat or just how I could lie to him effectively and NOT tell him I was doing Low Carb. With an HMO you may not have the choice of changing docs but you do have correct information.....thankfully! One of the best books I read that told me WHY is The Zone by Barry Sears. I was a biology major in college then later switch and took Statistics. That book was AMAZING! His diet is balanced in a way I have trouble with, that and the phone counselor totally freaked when I lost 11 pounds in 2 weeks, so I had to back into Atkins. Grab a copy of The Zone at the library and give it a read, you'll totally feel better about the choice you made aligning your eating with the Atkins approach. No one seems to remember the Old WeightWatchers diet is similar to Atkins and that was based on the Old Diabetic diets. I'm telling you, this isn't about health, it is about our Economy. You go low-fat feeding the 'grains/bread basket' economy, that feeds the pharmecutical industry with your prescriptions, which fuel more visits to the doctor as well as accelerating the aging process. I could go on and on but won't. Another good book written by an endocrinologist is Swartzbein Principle. She explains what The Zone leaves out. It is ok to let that god/doc believe what he wants to. And it is ok for you to take responsibility for your own health. The Health Industry is about the only Strong industry we have left fueling our economy now that we have shipped our jobs over seas. |

| Thank you Cottage, for your reply. I have several of Sears books and have tried his approach in the past but it drives my blood sugar through the roof. I can't eat that many carbs. Bernstein and Rosedale are other options, good but not better than Atkin. This I don't understand from your post. | It's gonna take time, but I think it will come. There will be a time when the ADA and doctors finally understand what causes diabetes, and how to handle it. It only makes sense to me that if my body reacts badly to something then the thing to do is avoid it. When you are highly allergic to something what does the doctor tell you? Don't eat that! Don't touch that! Stay away from that! When you are diagnosed with diabetes, what do most doctors tell you? Here, take these pills, and eat lots of bread, potatoes, pasta, corn and oh yea, it won't hurt you to have a little sugar now and then either. As for me, I prefer to avoid the thing that makes my body react badly. |

| I, too, have the same resentment toward the mainstream medical community. I would not be full blown diabetic if my old family practice Dr and OB-GYN would have listened to me. It took me going to at least 12 different Dr's and OB-GYN to find someone that understood and listened to me and my body. In March of 2003, I was diagnosed with PCOS and diabetes, finally!!! At least I then knew what was wrong with me. He was the one that suggested I go on Atkins, exercise and make lifestyle changes. |
