Hi,
I am a newly diagnosed 1.5 diabetic and on my trays in the hospital I was given the same CRAP. For a snack one evening I got graham crackers and grape juice. I was also given sugar packets to sweeten my unsweet tea. One plate had baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and carrots while a breakfast was rice krispies, milk, a blueberry muffin and orange juice. It was absurd.
However, my doctor supports low-carb, not Atkins specifically, but low-carb. If the doctor your daughter has won't listen then find a new doctor. Really--find a new one. Not all doctors know about diabetes and the care of its sufferers.

After doing some research and reading almost all of dr Bernsteins book, I came here.
By the way, I am a fallen away Atkineer. We are making a family commitment to make it easier on my daughter, plus a few of us need to lose a few lbs. I realize now that there is no choice here about food, the Atkins diet has to be a way of life. So many people get diabetes and hopefully there will be no more in my family who get it. By the way, the nurses and drs really ripped the Atkins diet in the hospital, (as they were giving her cupcakes on her lunch tray!)
It seems most of the diabetic information is for type 2 who need to lose weight. My daughter, on the other hand is extremely thin and cannot afford to lose a lb. She lost 20 lbs practically overnight but has put 15 back on.
Dr Bernstein recommends 6 carbs for breakfast, and 12 crabs for the other meals including bedtime snack.
Is she going to lose weight by doing this?
How careful do I need to be as far as what kind of carbs? For instance, dr Bernstein says no tomatoes and I find that too harsh for my daughter. Of coarse she will have to do whatever it takes...
One more question. Are there any other teenage diabetics on this board? Maybe some who are type 1.
Thank you so much for reading this long email.
By the way, it feels great to be eating this way again!
