| Hello, Metformin can sometimes cause you to feel upset to the tummy. It can also send you to the bathroom with the runs when you first start taking it. I personally wouldn't take extra carbs as this med is not a pill that lowers sugar right away. As it was explained to me it has to be in the system for a while before it really starts to work. It has to build up in the body. It does not lower your sugar it works with your body to get your cells to allow the insulin your body does make work better. It is like a key that unlocks the insulin process. 500 mg is a low dose. I would take it and just check your sugar regularly. If you see your sugar going to low you might be able to stop taking it while on atkins. This I would discuss with your doctor though. Hope this helps but please talk to your doctor to get a better answer. Michelle

| I take 1000mg 2x per day of metformin and I am in extended induction. I am having no issues with my blood sugar at all. It is controlled better now than ever. Even though I am in the US i do enjoy my cup of tea, so I just put some Splenda in it. No problems at all. I eat 20-30gm of carbs a day with no problems. As far as you kidneys, maybe drink more water and talk to a Dr, but I have had kidney stones my whole life and for me, it is just not drinking enough water.
