| Hi Carole! I am still on meds for anxiety and depression. I have cut the dose back with the docs help to 1/3 of what I was taking but cannot seem to get thru the withdrawl when I cut back more. I am on effexor....nasty stuff!! I hope to be able to get off of it...it has helped me gain alot of weight and has made it difficult to lose weight...but so far...with 10 pounds gone it appears as if Atkins is more powerful than the meds!! Hooray!! |

| Great news Dorrie! I was on meds for depression a few years ago and believe me I know about the weight gain. I stopped smoking 3 years ago on July 4th (my Independence Day) and after gaining 10 pounds after that I have successfully taken that 10 pounds back off plus another 23 - so I am happy with my results. This morning's numbers: fasting 109 - evening 90. I ate some deli ham rolled up and a string cheese 1 hour before taking my evening reading so it is a little high than it normally would be. I was riding my stationary bike and started feeling my legs give out because I hadn't eaten a good enough lunch and I needed something. This morning I took DH to work, planted 4 Japanese Maples and a holly bush in the back yard, re-potted 2 Boston Ferns on the front porch, I rode 25 miles on the stationary bike, made dinner, mowed the lawn, did a load of laundry & 30 minutes of HipHop Abs tonight. I'm beat - going to bed...it's been a long day. Tomorrow I have appointments with the Internist and Endocrinologist. I forgot to get my blood work done so I won't have any results from the Internist for a couple weeks (after I'm able to get in to the lab) - will find out what my A1C is now. I have 1 A1C done since starting Atkins and it was right after I started so I'm excited to see if it's come down again and by how much.

| Carole, I feel like we are in the same boat, as I said before. I am still trying to see the scale go down. I have increased my carbs from 20 to 25 carbs today. I am on the water challenge and have been floating. I am a little depressed but today I walked a mile at the farm and took in the beautiful scenery we have in VT. Now I am no longer depressed (LOL.) My bs are so normal. Falling from 250 and up down to 90-120. I am so delighted. I have dropped all but 1/2 of my glyburide and have recently cut my metformin to 1000 am and 500 pm. I hope when this week is up I will see some movement in my weight. I am older and realize this is a difficult task. I think everone my age wishes they had done this earlier in their life. Good luck with the water challenge! Audrey

| hi and thank you for posting here Aubrey. I agree with you about starting before my age also but up to this point I always wanted the quick fix no work diets that didn't work. If they had worked I wouldn't be here where I am today. When older friends told me how difficult it was for them to loose weight I admit I scoffed a bit and thought they weren't trying hard enough but unfortunately they were so right. I wish I could take back every eye roll and poor thought I had!! Well, I saw both the Internist and Endocrinologist today and had some good news -- no I am not off the meds and no meds were reduced like I had hoped BUT....I am down 12 pounds from the last time I was the Endo, my A1C is now 5.0 -- I was diagnosed last June at 10.3 so I have taken that number down half in a year (when in fact I didn't do anything to help myself until this past January). My blood pressure was 106/63 and the Endo and 108/60 at the Internist. I was told to get my blood work done as soon as I can so they can see the numbers and if they look good the Endo will take me off the glyb/metformin in the morning and only have me on the metformin morning and evening. I'm not upset but I'm not jumping up and down for joy as I hoped I would have either. They told me I don't have to test twice a day now - only 3 times a week unless I need reassurance that things are ok. That will save quite a bit of money, instead of using 28 test strips a week I'll be using 3 - 5 (maybe).....wow - that's quite a bit of money over a year. We talked to the Internist about mom being sick to her stomach so much -- he wants her to see a Gastro Specialist (DH has seen this guy before) and he gave her a script for nausea medicine. I think that's it -- I think she's a little upset at times that she's not in her own home, her life has changed completely around and she hasn't a lot of say so in anything now. She upsets herself - then her stomach gets upset. At least she hasn't started the panic attacks again....those weren't fun to deal with. Right now she wants to "do it my way" so I'll let her see what that does, but I'm sure we'll end up seeing the specialist but at least she told the doctor today about what was going on with her......that's a start. She said she's too old to go through another surgery....I told no one was mentioning surgery but she wanted nothing more to do with the conversation so I stopped. So all in all a fairly good day. We ran into a horrible storm on the way home - there was quart size hail reported 10 miles from our house ---- the lightening was hitting and thunder was immediate so we were right in the center of the storm. It rained heavily but we managed to get through it and home safely. I'm taking today off from exercise I'm tired and sore from yesterday! Tomorrow I'll get back at it!!

| strange thing happened after dinner tonight. I ate fine today -- had lunch at the hosptial and did well because they post the nutritional amount of each thing (you would be amazed at the amount of carbs & sodium in the food there!!) -- anyway, I ended up having a grilled chicken breast, a salad and fresh strawberries with a bottle water for lunch. we came home in a horrible storm and I laid down for about a half hour before dinner. For dinner I had a cheeseburger, cottage cheese and a salad with water and coffee. We ate at 6:30 as usual. At 8:00 I was watching TV when I knew my blood sugar was low .... can't figure out why it was low because my meals were good ones....I tested and my blood sugar was in the low 70's --- that's when I get the blurry vision, shakes and sweats.....I ate a 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds and that seemed to take care of the problem. I have never had that happen - where my blood sugar goes down so quickly after a good meal....makes me wonder if it is because I'm tired or from nerves.....

| Yesterday at the doctors office he said instead of testing twice a day I only have to test 3 times a week - more if I feel I need to but it's not necessary since my numbers are constant and have been good the past couple months. Monday I take mom to have her other eye surgery - we have to be at the hospital at 6:30 a.m. so as soon as they take her back and start getting her ready (before I can go sit with her until 9:00 when her surgery is scheduled) I'm going to go get my blood work. The lab is 3 minutes from the hospital so it's a good time to get it out of the way. Since I can't eat or drink until I have the blood work done I would lik eto get it done as early as possible. They open at 6:30 a.m. so that's great for me! I'll call tomorrow and get an appointment. The reason the endocrinologist hesitated from taking me off any of the meds is the last time I had blood work done it showed I had "fatty liver" so she said things needed to stay the same until she is sure it's been taken care of. I had 2 slices of almond bread "french toast" and sugar free syrup and 2 slices of ham lunchmeat for breakfast. 30oz water & a cup of coffee w/splenda Lunch was 1/2 c. green & yellow zucchini squash, 4 brussels sprouts (cooked in butter), and leftover chicken from dinner the other night. 30oz water. snack after my bike ride: string cheese and deli ham rolled up and Hunts jello (made with Splenda not Equal) and a cup of coffee and 30oz water. dinner: 1c spaghetti squash, Italian sausage patty and salad w/ranch dressing. 30oz water. Dinner was wonderful -- I added 1/4c marinara to the top of the squash for some additional color and flavor. Didn't finish my salad but put it back in the fridge - might eat it later tonight. I have made a flax cookie for later also.
