Hi Carole, I'm another Type 2. I'm very pleased so far with my bg results. This is my 2nd time around doing Atkins and I intend to succeed. Cheers to you for taking charge of your life.

thank you Wanda. This is probably the easiest WOE I've ever seen, it works and doesn't interfere with Diabetes....to me that means it's perfect!!!

I look forward to seeing your progress!

Default Re: Newbie Type 2 diabetic waiting to start

I am wrapping up week 3 of induction this weekend. In the 90s, before I became a type 2, I successfully lost 43 pounds over 10-12 weeks. I have lost no weight so far this time around even though I have been in ketosis since the second day of induction, hanging in there at 260, but I think this is due to 2 things: firstly, subsequent attempts at Atkins regimes take longer to kick in because my system is wise to the drill (says Dr. Mike over on Protein Power) and, second, my running and stair stepping has added muscle density to my legs. But I should start to lose soon. I guess I am resigned to several months of induction for now. I really want to get off my insulin and have already quit the lipitor because of all the negative talk about statins. On the upside I FEEL GREAT! My BG has always been swinging from mid 100s to mid 200s but now has come down significantly. However, without insulin while in strict induction I tested at 178. I took smaller insulin doses than my normal 25 units and got the number down, but I still have to take 15 - 20 units. I see where some on this forum have had to go 7 - 8 weeks before the unmedicated BG numbers came to within the normal range. This is my goal, as is getting to my college weight of 220. Whether my problem is one of insulin resisitivity or that I have actually lost beta cells remains to be seen. I guess you are never "cured" of diabetes unless you can pass a gucose tolerance test. Well, the benefits of low carb for diabetics is undeniable but I really look forward to seeing some quantifiable results. Thanks very much for all the input, meanwhile!

Hello Willyb,

Just so you know.. if you are not getting enough food with all the excersise you are doing your body could go into a starvation mode. Are you getting enough water as well? If you dont drink enough water your body will hold on to what ever it can, so while you might think you are not loosing weight your body is replacing the fat with stored water.

Also.. I have read that maybe you need more and should try going up one rung on the OWL ladder and see if you get any results. So in stead of 20 carbs per day you would have 25. Many find that going up the OWL ladder helps get them going especially when they are not loosing on induction.

Try posting some menus and let us see if we can spot any hidden carbs for you. You could be taking in more carbs than you realize. All of this is just throwing out some possible things that could be hindering your loss.

Good job for sticking to it even though the scale is not moving.

Michelle

Thanks, Michelle. You know, I really need to step up the water intake. I drink lots of coffee with Splenda and a diet coke once in a while. Most of my food consists of green salads covered with BBQ pork or chicken. For breakfast I usually do a cheeze omelet with bacon. I eat several handfuls of nuts and sugar free Jello with whipped cream. I still can't see going much over 20g of carb in my routine, and I have been in the middle purple zone on the keto strips so I know lipolysis is underway. Since I have had several 2-3 day attempts at Atkins over the last couple of years I think my system is as you say, something in a starvation mode. I had to fast 24+ hours last week to prepare for colonoscopy and after drinking that nasty NuLytely stuff I was not hungry much at all so yes my eating has been way down overall. Maybe I need to eat more eggs cheeze meats, etc. I probably need to increase my treadmill runs from 350 to 450 calorie burns and go from 2 -3 times a week to 4-5 times. At any rate I may need to kick out of the starvation mode and ketosis for a couple days to reset my system and then go back into it.

I found that just eating extra for 2 days really gets my weight loss going. I have found that my appetite is so small now, that I just don't eat enough.

So, I stay with legal foods, just eat more. make sure to get plenty of broccoli and salad, and stay at about 20-25g of carb. Remember, with metformin you aren't absorbing all the carb you are eating, that is one thing it does.

I just make sure to eat more calories and it seems to jumpstart me again.

Hmm, so the trick here is to actually eat more quantity to lose more weight so that the starvation mode does not factor in, presumably. I think tonight I will mosy down to the river and have some parmesian grilled oysters, bacon wrapped shrimp, and some fried catfish, along with the broccoli option instead of the potatoes and hush puppies. Can't wait!www.wintzellsoysterhouse.com

Yeah, Metformin is tricky. I don't talk about it on the main forums cuz the people with regular panceases (?) wouldn't understand.

But metformin really alters the way carbs are used and absorbed. It makes getiing into ketosis easier (not as many carbs around for use) but there must be something else happening because I am not losing as fast as the last 2 times on Atikins.

I have noticed on days where I eat 2200-2400 calories I lose more weight. If I string those days together I get a higher weekly weight loss.

Today, I haven't felt like eating. I don't feel particularly great, and I just don't want to eat. I can tell by my energy level that I haven't eaten enough. I might end up with 1600 calories today. So, maybe I should slam a few eggs and see what happens.

I have learned this thru trial and error. You might want to play with it to get a good measure for your own body. Diabetic bodies work just a little bit differently. It's like trying to tune a ferrari engine as opposed to a Ford. It doesn't need to be as precise on the Ford. We Ferraris are more tempermental.

Are you counting each splenda as 1 carb? Did you know that caffeine and diet coke have been known to stall people on weight loss?

1. How many carbs are in that BBQ chicken/pork?
2. The omelet with bacon sounds good.
3. If you are in induction nuts are a no no. How many carbs are you taking in of the nuts?
4. Are you counting the jello as a carb? Does it have splenda in it? If so.. you need to count it towards your carb count.

You need to sit down and write out everything you are eating. Look up the carb counts for everything. Your several 2-3 day attempts are not going to stop you from loosing now. I went off program for 2 weeks at christmas eating everything and anything I wanted and I have lost 3.4 lbs this year already and I have not excersices at all. Not that I am proud of that but just saying that if you are eating the way you should you will loose weight. If you are doing lots of caffeine and splenda that may be your problem. Try limiting both for a week and see what happens. Also only 4 oz of cheese a day while on induction and no nuts.

I would love to see your menu written down like this so you can see exacty how many carbs are in what you are eating. If you look at dinner you could have added 2 carbs to your meal somehow maybe you could have added some diced canned tomatoes over your chicken when you baked it and taken off the ketchup.

B- 3 eggs 1.8 carbs
b- 2oz of cheese 2 carbs
b- 3 slices of bacon 0 carbs
b- coffee with 1 splenda 1 carb
Total carbs- 4.8 carbs

L- 2 cups of salad greens 4 carbs
L- 1 oz of cheese 1 carb
L- 1/4 cup diced tomatoes 2 carbs
L-6 oz steak ( from last nights dinner) 0 carbs
L- 2 tbsp dressing 4 carbs
total carbs- 11 carbs

D- 1 cup green beens 2 carbs
D- 2 baked chicken breasts 0 carbs
D- 2 tbsp low carb ketchup 1 carb
Total carbs- 3

Total daily carbs- 18.8 carbs

If you need anything just ask. Good luck with your WOE.

Michelle
