Unhappy Saturated Fat and Diabetes

I've been reading lately that too much saturated fat will raise your blood sugars and also make it harder for you to lose weight. Has anyone found this to be true? Or is this just more bad information?

My son has Type 1 and he's found that ANY large amount of fat (saturated or not), a large portion of protein (for ex an 8 oz steak), or a combination of fat/protein (for ex a low carb pizza made of cheese, eggs and meats) will cause a rise in his blood sugar readings. Eating these has not caused him to stall but he does have to take more insulin to cover those foods. Even though pure fat and protein technically have 0 carbs, in the person with diabetes, these foods will normally cause BS to rise.

Hm, so what would be a solution since we can't have too many carbs? Just eat small portions more frequently?

You would just count carbs as usual but if you are using insulin you may need to take more to handle the fat and/or protein. And yes, smaller more frequent meals may be what works for you. Some diabetics need to eat every 4 hours to keep their glucose levels in a desirable range. My son is on an insulin pump so he gets a small steady stream of insulin, and therefore, does not need the more frequent eating schedule. Best way to find out is through trial and error and by testing your BS often!

Good luck and Take care,
Theresa

I haven't noticed any rise in bs readings after eating a lot of fat. Some sweeteners, like powdered Splenda will, however, cause a slight rise for me. Caffeine will also do that as well. So, I don't have too much with Splenda in it and I stay away from caffeine as much as possible.

for Tstormchaser

carbs make glucose

protein has 57% conversion rate to glucose

fat has like 10% conversion rate to glucose?

so best thing to eat would be 80% fat 18% protein 2% carbohydrates maybe? i dont know

but also i think if he worked out all his muscles so his muscles soaked up all the glucose instead of him that maybe help? im not sure

although i just thought of this i dont know if his muscles will beable to become insulin sensitive if he gets injections of insulin and you need insulin sensitive muscles for them to absorb all the glucose

but if he ever missed a work out or if he did not work out his muscles that good and they over flooded with glucose you would need to get him some insulin fast

hmm if i remmber type 1 dieabetes people cant absorb food properly so they are starving at a cellior level maybe geting some muscle on him will help things?

i dont know much hope something useful can be made out of this

this link should be of more use it talks about type 1 diabetes too

I am Type 2 and have been strictly following the plan since January 5 - I don't loose real quickly but I did loose 12 pounds during induction and have steadily lost since -- As of this morning I have lost 33 pounds and my blood sugar reading have dropped dramatically.

Choose foods on the low end of the glycemic index - that will help stabilize your blood sugars and allow you to continue to loose weight. Check out pages 78, 84 and 92 in the DANDR book -- also eat foods low on the glycemic load chart - pages 83 and 84. I got this information from Sherri on my first post here on the diabetic forum.
