Default How long have you had diabetes? Which Type?

I was diagnosed last July (200 with Type 2 diabetes.

I take 1 5/500 glyb/metformin in the morning and 1 1000 mg metformin in the evening.

Since starting Atkins my blood sugar numbers have come down (along with my A1C) so I am now considered "controlled diabetic".

the first 4 days on Atkins my numbers were:

fasting 134 evening 89
fasting 137 evening 93
fasting 102 evening 94
fasting 100 evening 106

my last 4 days on Atkins my numbers are:

fasting 99 evening 89
fasting 103 evening 98
fasting 90 evening 119 (stressful day - ate out)
fasting 113 (left over from eating out)

I grew up perfectly healthy, just a little chunky. I was diagnosed Type 1 in 1990 at age 20. Totally ruined my college drinking career. I had a car wreck on Jan 2 and cracked my sternum/bruised my heart. I checked out perfectly fine in August at the doctor, but I started losing weight in September. By Thanksgiving I had lost 60 pounds and went to a doc-in-a-box the day after. My sugar was over 900. Went on pills for 9 months and insulin in May of 91. I have been on a pump since 1995.

Theoretically, a major trauma to the body can set off an autoimmune repsonse that results in the islet cells being destroyed by rogue macrophages and white blood cells. Such is life.

So sorry to hear about your college career being foiled! Fortunately for me I was able to drink my way through college with no problem....my problems started after too much stress, too much junk food and too much self pity became my best friends.

My husband was sitting in his cardiologist office 6 months ago and mentioned he didn't feel too good, the doctor said it wasn't his heart so I whipped my meter out and checked his blood -- his number was 475 -- the cardiologist said we better get him to an endocrinologist that day and if not to the emergency room. So now we are a full fledged diabetic home...my mother also lives with us and was diagnosed 6 months before I was. It makes it easier for all of us because we have each other to lean on but it's also harder because I'm the only one on Atkins but I am strong enough to do this.

I hope you are able to get your numbers under control. What is your A1C?

I was diagnosed in November of 2000. I was only 39 years old and I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach. But it was also an odd sense of relief. I finally had a reason for why I was feeling like doo-doo for so long. Blood sugars are WAY better since getting back on Atkins. 14 day average is now around 130. I know my doctor is going to be pleased with my progress as well as my diabetic educator.

I was diagnosed at the age of 39 in 2000. I'm now on Glucovance twice a day, Januvia, and Actose for it. I also take Lasix for fluid retention, and Zestoretic for BP along with Potassium. Thus the reason for my going back to Atkins so I can eventually get off all this junk!!

I was dx'd at the end of Feb. 2009. type 2, metformin 500 mg twice daily, also synthroid .75 once in the morn, lovastatin for cholesterol at dinner. I was also on glypizide for sugar but had to stop that because it would drop me into the 40's. I was told by my doctor my body needed carbs so that was the reason he put me on the glipizide. Low fat for me did not work. Made me feel horrible. Started Atkins the newer version and gained weight, though bg readings were excellent. Started Mon on Atkins 72. will not weigh till next Mon. Blood glucose readings are 90 - 111. I have had no higher than that on this woe. I sometimes miss my carbs, but I do not miss the highs and lows !!! My husband is type 1 diabetic. for 25 yrs now.

I was dx'ed October 2006. Type 2...40 years old.
Was on Metformin and glimberide prior to starting Atkins a little more than a month ago and I am on no meds for most of this month now! Hooray! My average blood sugar reading is 96- 108 2 hours after I eat!!!!!! Much better than 270-450 and that was on meds!!!! I love what Atkins does for my diabetes...cannot wait to do a full 3 month A1c test!!!!!!!!!!
PS...Diabetes is in every one of the last 4 generations of our family...not sure prior to that!!! I hope it changes for my kids and granddaughters sake!

Hi Wannabe!! I still cannot believe how many carbs the original diet they gave me was...I think I was supposed to eat something like over 150 grams of carbs a day...thats nuts and I never did follow it...my fat intake was supposed to be really low as well and the protein was small..like the palm of my hand. I would have gone crazy with cravings and gained alot of weight on that plan. I never would have got off the meds...thank God for this WOE....suits me just fine!! Have a super day!!
