Default New member and newly diagnosed

Hello, all!

My name is JuJu, 41 and newly diagnosed with Type II. I am still having a hard time with my diagnosis; I just recently told my mom what was going on but no one else in my family knows. I had a baby last year and my GD was so bad, they hospitalized my on the spot. My doctor literally took money out of his own pocket and sent me by cab to the hospital. So I stayed in the hospital until my baby was born. Problem was, my numbers never came down and they think that my GD never went away and turned into type II. It sucks! I have a meter and all that stuff but I find myself forgetting to use it most day and I have not been eating well like I should. I skip most meals and eat a meal at the end of the day, mainly towards the middle of the night. I guess I am still in a sort of shock-denial. I am so angry at myself, I keep wondering what I did wrong and then when I think of how stupid I have been eating all this junk and not taking care of myself, I know how this happened. No one to blame but me, myself and I for what has happened. I told my Nutritionist about Atkins and she was all for it, she just said be careful because sometimes my BS will go really low and I need to watch out for that. I haven't restarted yet but I am trying for this week. I have been almost a month into my diagnosis and I just feel frustrated, angry, scared, and feel like I have been handed a death sentence. I am trying to get my head straight and get on with things. I go shopping tonight and then take my measurements tomorrow and try to get some support from my mom. My doc says maybe I should see a therapist and I thik I am going to do that, too. In the past year, I was told I was pregnant and had MS (at the same time!), seperated from my husband, moved to live with my mother in Minnesota, and diagnosed with diabetes. It has been a lot to cope with. Sorry, I'm rambling. Anyway, its nice to find a board with this issue so that I can have some support as I feel my life is falling to pieces right now.

This plan will help you, but you have to commit to it 100%...plan you meals, bring healthy snacks, drink a ton of water. Also, read the book if you haven't already. You can undo the damage. There are many type II diabetics on this forum who no longer have to take medicine for their condition. Good luck and keep on!

First of all, buy a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002. Read the book. The book will give you an actual list of Rules for beginning Atkins and exactly what is on the list for foods you are allowed to eat.

I can only tell you that I've gone from having to have oral medications for my diabetes along with two insulin injections every day to being off all medications.

Yes, I had a lot of weight to lose, but you can do it and you need to do it for yourself and for your baby.

I'd also suggest that you go to an educational program at the local hospital for people with diabetes to know how to take care of yourself. Having said that, I will tell you that some people aren't fans of Atkins, but they can't argue with eating beef, poultry and fish and vegetables and some fats.

Best wishes ...

1. You need to commit to taking your glucose readings EVERY DAY -- I put my meter on the kitchen table and make sure I take my reading first thing in the morning - I also take another reading at dinner. To being with my endocrinologist had me taking another reading at lunch but since my A1C came down dramatically I only take it twice a day now.

2. Eat 3 times a day and get 2 snacks in also -- you need to get your blood sugar under control -- this diet will help you do this but you have to eat on a schedule - that was the first thing I was told after I found out I had diabetes.

3. Make sure you take your medicine everyday. I have "forgotten" to take my pills a couple days and found my whole world was a mess for a day or so afterward.

Get on the Atkins plan and do it 100% - I started January 5, 2009 and my blood sugar numbers have gone from 130's and 140's to 100 and under since then. If you eat regularily everyday and get snacks in your blood sugar should not go too low....if you feel a little odd go get a glass of water and eat a few radishes, zucchini chips, some lettuce or a little meat dipped in mayo. You do not need to eat anything sweet, or eat a glucose pill just take it easy for awhile (maybe a half hour) and take your blood sugar again -- you should be fine.

The only time my blood sugar goes down where I feel odd is when I have done something strenuous like mowing the lawn too quickly or exercising for too long a time without replenishing my fluids.

Until you can get a copy of the 2002 DANDR book here are some links to get you started. There are plenty of wonderful stickies over in the Induction forum that will help you also. I'm also sending links to recipe sites that will help you make legal foods. Even if you don't think you will like something try it with an open mind....I eat stuffed green peppers and zucchini and I drink 150 ounces of water a day....amazing!

Good luck -- keep in touch so I know how you are doing.
