Default Type 1, Atkins, and Exercise

How do you get them to all work together?

Okay, so I'm trying Atkins again for the third time. My first two times failed because I could never figure out my insulin and I kept crashing (well, and that plus I'm not much of a meat eater). Since I have hypopglecemia unawareness this is a potentially deadly situation. But I'm so tired of being fat so I'm trying again.

How do y'all figure for exercise? I can't do even light exercise without experiencing a sharp drop in BS - sometimes by as much as 100 points. I usually exercise after dinner and skip or decrease my evening dose of humalog to account for it. But even if I eat all 15 allowed grams of carbs for dinner it won't be enough - I normally eat 30 or so carbs for dinner and I still sometimes get too low after exercise and have to eat some sugar afterwards.

Also, how do y'all figure your induction? Do you just not count the days you crash and have to eat some carbs, and begin the next day as day 1 all over again?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Default Re: Type 1, Atkins, and Exercise

sorry I can't help you but I can tell you my experience. I am Type 2 - on 1000 mg metformin at night and 5/500 mg glyb/metformin in the morning. When I exercise in the morning I feel better so that's when I try to get my biggest amount of exercise done. I ride a stationary bike 25 miles a day - I've also started adding ab work and an exercise video. I also mow the yard a couple times a week.

I don't have any trouble most days with crashing but I keep my carbs spread throughout the day. I eat vegetables with my breakfast each morning, then while I'm on the bike I have radishes/celery/snow peas and a string cheese plus I drink 30 oz of water, for lunch I have a salad to go along with whatever meat and leftover veggies I have. During the afternoon I try to eat a couple radishes and some celery or some cauliflower and broccoli. I make sure to have at least 2 veggies at dinner with the meat.

My morning blood sugar readings are 100 - 115 .... evening are 77 - 90. I've been this way for a couple months now. The weight is coming off painfully slow but it is coming off so that's all that matter.

Don't save all your carbs for one meal you need to spread them throughout the day. When I haven't eaten enough or have been outside and my blood sugar has dropped I come in drink a glass of water and eat a few veggies and either some chicken or deli ham wrapped up and dipped in mayo -- within a few minutes I feel better and the shakiness and blurred vision goes away. That has only happened a couple times and it was because I didn't eat well enough before I started working in the sun.

Don't keep starting over on day - just continue to the next day. You are allowed 20 net carbs daily - make sure you eat all of them and they most of them come from vegetables. Drink plenty of water (at least 64 ounces of pure water) daily. Start some sort of exercise as soon as possible.

If you continue to have problems with crashing you should contact your endocrinologist and see what they think.

There are plenty of good food you can eat on the acceptable food list - make sure you are only eating from there -- no shakes & bars they aren't induction friendly.

Good luck

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

Default Re: Type 1, Atkins, and Exercise

I'm actually trying to figure out the same thing. My fiance is type 1 diabetic and has been since he was 11. We found out that the Atkins diet is supposed to be good for him, but he just doesn't know how to go about starting. Just yesterday he said he FELT low, but that went away. And he doesn't know how to go about fixing a low if he has one while still being on Atkins. Hopefully someone knows something about it, because I'm really interested in knowing how he can do this.

Good luck! and be careful until you figure it out!

Thanks!

I've decided it's going to be impossible to exercise and take in only 15 g of carb, so at least for the first few weeks I'll just have to veg around the house! If it turns out to be impossible to stay above 65, then I guess I'll just have to go back to simply low-carbing, which is effective just not quick enough for me right now! I need a real jump-start! But so far I've only had to down a regular coke the first day - but I also ran up in the 400s Monday and above 150 all day today. I'm assuming I need to cut out the humalog altogether and just increase my lantus so I'm going up 1/2 unit per dose (I split the dose so that's a unit per day) until I finally hit that happy medium between not too high but not too low.

If your fiance figures it out, let me know what his trick is! And good luck to him, too!

Thanks! And thanks for the long post loaded with links. Unfortunately, I guess I didn't make it clear I'm type 1 so as sweet as it was of you to sure your experiences with me, it doesn't help me much or answer my question. Type 1s have different circumstances that you lucky (okay lucky in comparison!) type 2s don't even have to deal with. But you've got a good heart to try and help, and I really appreciate it. Good luck to you, too! Sounds like you're doing great so far!
