| Hi - I'm Type 2 so I won't be a lot of help (as I've been told by Type 1's before) but I wanted to tell you we don't go "carb free" -- you should be eating up to 20 carbs per day, mostly coming from veggies. We use Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) 2002 edition - you should get a copy before you start on the plan so you know exactly what you are doing. Also talk to your endocrinologist about what you are doing. Hopefully your endo will be one of the great drs that actually believes in Atkins .... there are so many who don't understand the plan and think we only eat meat and cheese in large quantities --- there is nothing further from the truth -- we eat more veggies on the plan than most of us ever ate before. Here is how you can get a copy of the DANDR book if you can't find one locally: check www.half.com or www.amazon.com for a cheap copy - mine was under $5.00 with shipping. Other info for you and links to help: *Before you start take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of induction - there are too many variables daily and hourly that can cause your weight to change, so weighing at the end of induction is what Dr. Atkins suggested. *Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily. *Drink 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added ***– see below for more info). *Take your supplements and exercise *Stay away from the shakes and bars (they aren’t legal on induction) and any processed or chemically enhanced foods – we eat whole foods. Check the stickies (information posts) at the top of this page – it’s a condensed version of the DANDR book. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/ Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including: Filtered water Mineral water Spring water Tap water *** Crystal Lite, sugar free teas, sugar free kool-aid & diet sodas do not count they are chemically enhanced and most include aspartame (also not allowed on Atkins) – PURE water is the only thing that counts toward your daily water intake. If you need a “flavor” in your water float a lemon or lime slice on top of your water The recipe sites are a helpful way to make your meals more enjoyable – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with. Good luck.

| hi cjester.. my 17 year old son has type one diabetes as well.. he is a big boy needs to loose weight.. we have tryed all the low fat foods..nothing helps him to loose weight..i guess he could be more active.. but you know being a typical teenager, if we say do some exercise daily he will just do the opposite..my husband and i were on the atkins a while ago and had great success loosing 20 kgs each.. but it was so hard to juggle every bit of food prep as my son had to have the carbs.. so we gave in and thought his needs are more important.. his endo didnt like the idea of him going on the atkins cos of the amount of meat and cheese you can eat..they just didnt get it..it made sence to us though..i know his weight would drop if he was on the atkins.. but his sugar levels would also drop as he needs more carbs..everyone is different i guess.. but this is the experience we had with our son and us being on the atkins diet..god luck .. deb |
