Default blood sugar with veggies

I have chosen to move up a rung with more veggies..but..my night sugars have risen slightly. They were at 90-100 when I was on 20 grams of carb and now I have gone to 25 grams and they are shooting up to 140's. I am still in mild Ketosis but still trying to get that scale to move. I think it memorized my weight and won't let go. LOL

I could take another glyburide before dinner. I now take 5mg. Dr. said maybe 10 mg before dinner would control the night BS.

Is it normal on this diet to see BS go up when adding a new veggy? Does anyone know if this is normal? Veggies have some sugar and maybe it is too much for my system at this time. My fitday ratios are running 65-70 fat, 20-30 protein, 5-6% carb and about 1300-1800 calories.

Each day I get up and plan my menu for the day. When we go out to lunch I plan and go to resturants that have a menu that I am aware of and plan the order ahead. (steak on salad with blue cheese dressing on side) or Hamburger with BLT and cheese. No roll. I love beef so it is easy for me to find a dinner or place to eat.

Here I go again babbling. But thanks for listening, I need the support right now. Audrey

Hi Audrey -- I had just the opposite effect when I started up the Rungs....my blood sugars went down. My other problem is if I have anything sweet (like whipped cream) my blood sugars go down even more....I need to talk to my endocrinologist about it.

Are there specific veggies that make your blood sugar go up more than others? Have you found a pattern?

Thumbs up Re: blood sugar with veggies

Hi Audrey,
When I began Atkins 5 years ago I was a Type- 2 Diabetic. After 47 days in extended induction my Diabetes reversed. I truly believe it's because I chose veggies lowest on the GI (glycemic index) For instance, I stayed away from yellow onions and stuck with leaks and green onions. Also, I didn't eat tomatoes or anything made with tomatoes, if I did it was in moderation and very limited.
Are these any of the veggies that cause your BS to rise? If so, you may want to consider leaving them out untill your BS level out.
Are you taking any supplements?
Supplements to take that will lower BS are-
Alpha-Lopic Acid, Chromium Pic, Pro-biotics (for yeast problems), Noni Juice (normalizes glucose levels), Cinnamon 500 mg (lowers glucose levels by 40 points) and Olive Leaf Extract (anti-fungul)
Chromium Pic is one of my all time favorite supplements for Diabetes. If a person is low in Chromium Pic they are most likely going to be Diabetic.
If I were you, I would get some Chromium Pic and Olive Leaf Extract on borad and see if that won't make a difference for you. Give it a couple weeks to kick in. I think you'll be pleased to see the results they will give you.
Wishing you the best of health and lite.
Sincerely, Sherri

Hi Carole, I am having a bad day, not awfully bad but I cheated for the first time in almost 6 months. I actually ate the chips on my plate at lunch. Who knows why, but they really looked tempting. I am not in ketosis tonight but my bs are pretty normal.
110 at bedtime. Last night they dropped to the lowest I have ever been. (47) I ate some peanut butter and a little applesauce to get it back up. When I went to bed it went up to 140 and I decided to take my insulin. When it gets low like that it scares me.

I am trying to increase my veggies. Yesterday I had baked salmon, cauliflower 1/2 cup and 1/2 cup summer squash for dinner --tuna w/mayo for lunch with celery and a small homemade coleslaw. I also had 1/2 cup of my homemade ice cream. 2 oz of heavy cream, 1 egg, 1/4 cup water, 1 splenda and a touch of vinalla. It seems to help me with my dessert at night since I hear so much negative about Jell-o.

My breakfast are almost always 2 eggs with either sausage or bacon. I have made a crustless quiche for variety. I have that once or twice week. My fitday shows me to be within all the %. I have gone up and down a pound for the last 4 weeks but it never stays down. Yesterday I dropped to 230 from 231. I had been 229 2 weeks ago.

Let me know how you are doing and if you have any comments for me on my diet. You are such a good supporter and mentor to me. Good Night for now. Audrey

Sherri, thank you for the information on some veggies that might be better that what I am eating. I also appreciate the info on olive leaf extract and cinnimon. I have heard cinnimon is healthy. I take a lot of meds now and have to check out wether they will interfer with my present pills.

I feel that I have come a long way since I started the diet and hope that I can continue to have self control and not let down my guard. Today was a bad day, I felt so guilty after lunch I got spastic about what to eat for supper. I stuck to the program and got back on course. It is not worth it to give back all the hard work I have put into this diet. Audrey

I've noticed that tomatoes tend to raise my blood sugar readings. As does caffine. Which is no problem because I've been severely limiting my caffeine intake for years. As does, so called, sugar free ice cream. I learned to leave that stuff alone! I guess everyone reacts differently to different food.
