hi everyone
am new to this site, just started the atkins again last week, am off for a run a bit later, strained my calf a few weeks ago and not been able to run but am off out this afternoon for a gentle jog, how do you guys find running on a low carb diet, cause i am a bit worried that the distance i do i wont have the energy to do it, i have always had a high carb meal the night before a long run, do yu have any purticular meals before a long run

Sarny, what do you consider to be a "long run"?

I run 10 miles or less on an empty stomach with no problems. If I plan to run farther than that, then I will eat some full fat yogurt and a banana or maybe some nuts. Nothing too high in fiber though. High fiber can cause tummy issues; not what you want if you run outdoors in the heat/humidity like I do. (trust me, I have had to resort to "doing what the pioneers did" on more than one occasion...)

As long as you are well hydrated, you should be fine running with little to nothing in your stomach. I would suggest powerade zero if you run in ridiculous heat/humidity like I do here in west central Florida. I sweat a ton.

I was sick for the past 5 days -- I had some sort of awful stomach virus it was really bad.

Today is my first day back to running - Monday 6 kilos in 45 minutes.

hi ttdriver
up untill injury i was running my long run around 10-12 miles on a sunday, wow i cant beleive you run on empty, and in the heat as well, living in the uk we rarely have hot weather and when we do its too hard to run in it i really do have to change my way of thinking towards food and running, i manage to run a nice easy 6miles this evening in 58 mins, not very fast but pain free, how long have you been runing and do you do many races

I have been running since November 1, 2003. In that time, I have finished two 26.2 mile marathons, too many half marathons to count, along with a ton of 15ks, 10ks, and 5ks. Approximately 9,000 training miles since 2003, all LC (atkins maintenance). I do run year round outdoors in our wonderful exasperating heat and humidity. I try and run early in the day or in the evenings when its a tad bit cooler. I respect the fact that our noonday sun can and will kill you.

Some folks need more food in their stomachs in order to perform well; that's not the case for me. I don't run well at all with a full stomach or even a half full stomach. So I gut it out; making sure I am well hydrated and forego the food until after I run. Interestingly, the farther I run, the less appetite I have. Perhaps I'm the exception rather than the rule .. some folks swear that strenuous exercise INCREASES their appetite, but that's not true for me.

Good luck with your running!

As for me, Monday, 7/20: 5.2 mile run after work. Saturday, 7/18: 6.2 mile run. 31.5 miles last week; pushing for 33 or more this week.

Betty

thanks ttdriver! You know I run an hour after I eat a breakfast of one cheesecake muffin and a cup of coffee. That works best for me.

Ok in order to try to get my workout to be an hour only -- I increased running speed to 9km/hr for the running part, and kept the walking part at 7km/hr and decreased running time to 65 minutes. I didnt quite make it to 9 kilos but it came out to 8.05. Well good enough until I can tweak it further.
