| Brandywines are my absolute favorite tomatoes. They will satisfy a sweet tooth much better than candy IMHO. I also love Juliettes (a grape type) because they are reliable producers even in our hot muggy August weather. Last summer we had a record number of 90+ and nights not getting below 70. They were the only ones that continued producing. And they keep on going through a few light frosts. I am currently visiting my older son in the SF bay area. His neighbors have a lemon tree that drop fruit on our side of the fence. It is such a decadent feeling to be able to use fresh lemon juice liberally on broccoli, jicama and fish and not have to pay 20-50 cents apiece for the lemons.

| I want to have some fresh veggies and herbs but I have two small patios and both have shade for most of the day. They do get some sun the not like a good yard would. I'm not sure what I can have! Ideally I would love a good bunch of herbs and some lemon cucumber, zuchinni, eggplant, strawberry and peppers. Does anyone have any ideas about plants that do well in partial shade on the west coast?

| Any of the greens....spinach, lettuce. etc would do ok in partial shade. The nightshade family need a minimum of 6 hours sun. |

| Ideally I would love a good bunch of herbs and some lemon cucumber, zuchinni, eggplant, strawberry and peppers. For the herbs, consider getting an Aero Garden. It's a hydroponic setup with grow lights and timer, and takes very little space on a counter. It comes with a free herb seed kit and you can get a bunch of other herb combinations also. www.aerogrow.com/

| You guys are making me jealous, we can't even think about planting anything here for 6-8 weeks depending on what the spring is like. Though most people plant their pansies late April. I'm not much of a gardener, but have discovered a few things that I can grow! I grew awesome rhubarb last year..it should come back so hoping to get even more. Stevia works really well for me, grows like a weed actually. Planted a raspberry bush that didn't do much last year..hoping it comes back. It grows wild up at our cottage (3 hours north of here)..so i'd imagine it's hearty . Don't plan on planting it up there though it'll just attract the bears. I think this year for my annual veggies I'll do green/red peppers in containers, green onions, zucchini and maybe a squash. Megs do you think Chayote could be started in a pot then transferred? I can get lots of chayote here..and i've seen them like you described they'd probably be good for planting.

| Quo, as long as your partial shade gets about 6 hours of sunlight, you should be able to grow things like herbs, lettuces, squash, etc. There's a great article in the April-May issue of Mother Earth News about container gardening. ![]() Jen, start the chayote in a pot. I took a look at a chayote in the supermarket yesterday and noticed I made a mistake. It's the blossom end that has the cleavage. Look to see if the blossom end has a very wide cleavage with a bump in the middle of it. That chayote is okay to plant. Stick it into the soil, blossom end up, don't cover up the cleavage area.
