Basic Keyboard Question?

This is a very simple question, but I don't know how to fix this when it happens:

When I am typing on my keyboard and need to go back and add or change a word or letter, for example, I type "someting'' and go back to add the "h", it normally just lets me add it in, but instead starts to replace the next letter with the new letter and so on and so on. It continues to do this letter to letter, like some sort of auto delete. I feel I do this with my right hand or little pinkie, but not sure what I am hitting, so can't return it to it's default status, other than to close what I am doing and come back to allow it to reset this. I hope I explained this ok. Anyone know what I mean? LOL Thanks.

Between the letters and the numbers on the right side of the keyboard is a button that says insert you need to press it once. It changes it to let you insert instead replace. Hope this helps.
