Default Cholesterol

I had a blood test for insurance recently and got the results last night.

Cholesterol 287
HDL 77
Cholesterol Ratio 3.7
LDL 199
LDL/HDL ratio 2.57
Triglycycerides 50
Glucose 60

Okay, so I cannot find my results from my previous check, but I know that they were normal. (I will be calling the doctor as soon as the office opens).

I started Atkins in late January and have been doing extended induction.

I am really concerned about the numbers, and want to be prepared with questions and suggestions when I meet with my doctor. I do not want to go on medicine, because I am certain it has something to do with the diet.

I do eat a lot of red meat but I always have (MIL raises beef) and never have had a problem.

Has anyone had a high reading and reduced it by just going on to OWL?

I read a few of the threads here, but wanted to get this out before I finished reading (if I have the time).
Thanks in advance.

Wanted to add that I do NOT want to take medicines can anyone share foods that are cholesterol lowering? Or direct me to information that can help with that.

Your ratios are fine! See this link for details.

Then read this:

http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/cho...ol_myth_2.html

If you're *still* concerned (which I wouldn't be), then flush-free niacin works wonders on cholesterol, along with garlic, fish oil (omega 3), and red rice yeast.

http://www.lef.org/protocols/prtcl-032b.shtml

I also eat ALOT of red meats and seafood (shrimp). No effect on my cholesterol at all. In fact, my ratios at my last test were 1.12. Your body makes 80% of its own cholesterol and the remaining 20% is from your diet. Actually, cholesterol is VITAL to the normal functioning of the human body. Doctors have been brainwashed by DRUG COMPANIES WHO PEDDLE THESE EXPENSIVE DANGEROUS DRUGS to pass them out like candy.

Your triglycerides are FABULOUS. Congrats on that! Oh and BTW, most professional doctors agree that its your trigs (blood fats) that contribute most to any sort of heart disease.

Thanks for the response. I have worried since I got them last night. I have been reading a lot of the threads and started to relax a little since I originally posted.

My husbands ratios are 4.1 (Cholesterol) and 2.82 (LDL/HDL) is that good too? I know when we had our cholesterol done before, she told my dh that he was borderline and that he needed to go on a low fat diet. This was pre-Atkins and all he did after that was gain weight. With Atkins we are losing nicely, so I hate to give it up. I know if I go to her, she is going to push for a low fat diet. (I do not even like her as a doctor and have been procrastinating finding a new one.... I guess I better start looking).

Thanks for the articles, I will go read them now.

Dr. A said patients may see a slight rise in their cholesterol levels initially, however they will eventually drop back down. Most of the rise is usually contributed to HDL cholesterol. However, talk to your Doc.
