in my opinion, the tremendous health benefits of doing atkins start immediately. specific answers tailored to your personal BP would have to be determined by time and a competent atkins saavy physician.

you are off to a good start!

First, everyone will be different but I will urge you to monitor your BP very closely. If you have hypertension then you should have your own monitor and you should be taking your BP every day, 2x a day is even better. And stay in contact with your Dr.

Here's my experience--- started Jan 02, 2004, BP was sky high, on medication, and 60# to lose. I lost 4# during induction, and didn't lose any more weight for 7 weeks. HOWEVER, my BP dropped from being sky-high to normal range, then to LOW ':nod' we're talking 100/65 low. I was thrilled as was my Doc, and we started reducing my meds. Mind you I had only lost 4# but as my Doc said---Carole, your insulin level has stablized and so your BP has dropped.

In August I was down 40#, or where I'm at now and off BP medication. My Doc continued to monitor me closely, as did I. We were SHOCKED in late Jan when my hypertension returned and sadly I'm back on medication. We have run all sorts of tests and there's no reason why it went high suddenly, but some of us are just genetically inclined for hypertension. Hypertension runs on both sides of my family, M and F, so.....I'm lucky ':nono'

So, yes, you could find your BP dropping way before you lose very much weight. Yes, you could find that you get off your BP medication, way before you reach goal. Then again, it might not happen. Monitor and work with your Doc. Please do not change your doseage on your own.

Let me also share that my Doc is thrilled with my low-carb Atkins woe and has said so. My blood test results showed that:

.........Before Atkins..........3m on Atkins........13m on Atkins
LDL.........116................................90. .......................67...you want this to go low
Trigly......141...............................73.. ......................56...you want this to go low
HDL...........61................................68 ........................67...you want this to go high
Cholest.....204?.........................173...... ................134
A1C............5.3...............................5 .1.....................5.5...blood sugar level, and it's good too

Let us know how it goes!!!

Atkins does NOT necessarily make your blood pressure go down. It did not make mine go down, and I lost a lot of weight. High blood pressure is herditary in my family, so it is something I am stuck with. You may be, too.

it wil depend on the cause of your high blood pressure. High blood sugar causes high blood pressure so if you are a high BS person your BP will drop on Atkins. Atkins is also a higher then normal protein intake which acts as a diuretic and drops blood pressure too. A lot of the foods we eat are high potassium which can lower blood presure too.

And there is the fact that if you are just out 25 pounds over weight you hacve 5000 more miles of blood vessels for the heart to pump blood through so just losing weight can cause blood pressure to do down as the lenght of the travel is shorter.

So it will have a lot to do with what is the4 cause of your high blood pressure as to if and when your diet and exercise changes will lower your blood pressure.

When I was 35 pounds lighter and exercising, I still had high BP. I didn't know high BS caused high BP. But I don't have high BS, so perhaps that explains why Atkins did not lower by BP.

I don't know that there is a specific cause for my blood pressure other than heredity! Everyone in my immediate family has high BP. I am taking medication to treat it (Avapro). Sometimes my BP gets a little high when I'm stressed, so the medication does not keep my BP in check 100% of the time.

My Dr said that the reason for High Blood pressure is not really known. May be the older we get the more seriously we take life!

check out my results under"Peddin Pete" results after 11 days.
I do find that exercise and deep breathing help also.
If you want to try something, sit down, take in deep breathes to the count of 10, let out slowly to count of 10. Do this for 2 or 3 minutes and then take your reading.Think you will be surprised. Pete
