| Most of the foods you have listed are really only suitable if you got car/caravan camping, no? I often go camping carrying water and food and tent and walking into the campsite for a half day, and staying for a few nights. Are there any other suggestions for camping food that can be used when camping for a few days? Most of the dried camping foods i can buy are usually rice/pasta/carb-laden or freeze-dried veg like peas only...

| there are many places you can order on line freeze dried proteins without rice or pasta and veggies. fix your own when you arrive. If you are OWLing you can carry nuts, cheeses, powdered eggs, dried berries, beans, whole grains ,and lots of other stuff you can dehydrate at home like beef strips and veggies. Add that to INduction tuna or chicken in a pouch and you got great meals. Flax meal hot cereal taates great camping too.

| i say some canned sardines, tuna, canned ham without sugar, canned veggies etc.. also those packaged already cooked hams.. those are good for more than a week.. and there are some that have no sugars or corn starch or anything... also beef jerkey and other dried meats, and cheeese! u could also make cheese chips for a snack.. those seem to be good for a few days.. but at least for the first few days you cna bring meat and cook it on the fire! but hey, bringing good food camping is a hassle for everyone, not just ppl on atkins |

| Good point. My post was directed mostly at weekend camping trips or short ones. Unless you make trips into town for more ice, it will be hard to keep meat and veggies good for very long. That's when good planning comes in handy. Being creative. If there is anyone out there who has suggestions for longer camping trips and what foods will keep longer, please feel free!! :nod

| I was at one of those warehouse club stores the other evening and saw an interesting product. It was a fully cooked tuna steak in a foil pouch. The directions were to heat and eat. No refrigeration required. I was tempted to buy it, but with the warehouse-size packge of 6 or 8 I didn't want to be stuck with alot of food that tastes bad. Maybe if I see it in the regular supermarket I'll try one out. If it's any good, I can see this kind of thing coming in real handy for one of my weekend field trips. :yes

| use a dehydrator and dry mushrooms peppers onions ect then store them in zippies..also you can make your own jerky as many people here do ...I backpack as well Tickle and can bring a feast that would make your eyes pop out :yikes ...try backpack cream of mushroom soup...you can use the tiny cans of cream dried mushrooms my famous knorr cubes (I love the porccini ones) and some dried herbs and cracked pepper....all heated on the camp stove ....I keep a selection of freshly dried herbs, boullion cubes and spices all ready to go in tiny containers or mix your own seasoning salt ...I thinkk the backpacking foods are over priced and taste like crap... you can use powdered eggs but I carry fresh ones already broken in a plastic container cheese travels well in a back pack...if you are there low carb torillas are the bomb...oh and nuts ..coconut ...pine nuts... I plan one big meal a day for the pm and then have great snacks for the rest of the day.....celery and cream cheese with olives....there are so many things.....that can be slipped into the backpack and still leaves room for my beer and wine!!!! LOL |
