Default Diet Rite Cola Has Literally Zero Carbs!!

I initially posted a question about this, and wanted to start a post dedicated to this in particular because of the extreme popularity of diet colas. When in the induction phase, it is very important to keep those carbs under 20. I was sick of drinking water and wanted a Diet Right, but did not know the TRUE carb content. After talking with the Diet Rite Company (complete waste of time), and the McNeil Company (Manufacturers of Splenda), I was able to come up with the following SOLID conclusion about the ACTUAL carb content of Diet Rite cola.

McNeil, the manufactuer of Splenda creates this product in two forms, the powder, measureable form, and the pure liquid sucralose form. In the pure form there are ZERO literal carbs. In the pourable powder form, there are the equalivalent of one carb per packet. Where does the 1 carb come from in the pourable/measurable form? From the "fillers" used to bulk the product up for volume.

When soda manufacturers purchase "Splenda" for their colas, they are purchasing it in pure liquid form (there is no need for fluff/filler agents), and therfore the can of Diet Rite has ZERO literal carbs per can. This took a lot of looking in to, the Diet Rite customer service reps would not talk about quantitative content of anything because the information is "Proprietary" - of course.

But, the gem of information comes in knowing that soda manufacturers use pure sucralose in the creation of the cola, and unless you see the words "maltodextrin" the filler, listed in the ingredients, then you are dealing with a PURE Sucralose product, and therefore you are drinking ZERO CARBS!

Time to crack open a Diet Rite cola (Without Guilt or Concern).

By the way, I do not consider a cola product that has zero calories, zero carbs, and zero sodium, to be "Junk Food". Coke or Pepsi in original form, or with Aspartame is junk food in my book.

I hope this helps everyone that enjoys cola and misses the refreshing taste!

You might be interested to follow this link and read the posts. It illuminates exaclty what I am talking about here. In these posts, a number of cyclists are talking about this very subject. It proves my point.

http://www.cyclingforums.com/archive...p/t-94466.html

Congratulations Cola lovers.

The confusion on all of this started when cola companies put the "Splenda" label on the can/bottle. When we see that label we think of the packet and then think of the carbs.

Bottom line - Cola companies use the Liquid form of Splenda and is completely absent of carbohydrates. Interesting that companies have not come out with the liquid form of sucrlose - my understanding is, it is a hundred times sweeter than sugar and consumers would have a hard time measuring out so litle of the product as to add the right amount of sweetness.

But you still have to count your sweetener servings for the day. One can of Diet Rite is,
I believe, 2 servings (check the label), therefore if you drink 1 can you use up 2 daily servings of sweetener, don't forget!

And also, as pointed out by not2late, on the other threads you started with this title.

You must also make sure you drink all of your water as well as the cola, and not instead of.

Thanks for the post though b8tovene.

Motherofgizmo,

I posted this information to inform everyone that you do NOT have to count these cans are atrifical sweeteners. Everyone is so died-in-the-wool about this issue. What I ahve stated here is fact. The cola literally zero carbs. You do not have to count them as one sweetener. If you find this in the literature, I would like to see it.

Is the cola sweet? Then obviously it has been sweetened. By what? A sweetener. Liquid, powder, it needs to be counted. Many people (myself included) have attitudes about this issue because they have tried, failed, or been stalled because of claims about not needing to count sweeteners or not worrying about it.

This post is more harmful than helpful for those who have a real chance to break away from soda and sweetener addictions and who may drink these and be tempted towards other "low carb" candies or even off this WOL altogether.

(Is anyone else suspicious about poster being a representative from Diet Rite? Hmmmmm...)

Default Re: Diet Rite Cola Has Literally Zero Carbs!!

Once again Concerns come with people who have cravings triggered by sweet things. If you crave sweet, then sweet is sweet. It starts a chain reaction and then you want more sweet. No matter how many carbs, calories, caffeine, etc, your brain senses sweet, and in some people this is bad.

Also

carbonated water, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, potassium benzoate (preservative), potassium citrate, sucralose (Splenda brand, a non-nutritive sweetener), acesulfame potassium (Sunett Brand, a non-nutritive sweetener), caramel color, red 40, blue 1
Nutrition facts: Calories 0; Total fat 0g; sodium 0mg; total carb 0g; protein 0g

Those are the ingredients and nutrition facts for a diet rite kiwi.
Many people who've found Atkins to be the Way and the Word are advocates for natural also.

Potassium Benzoate: "It is approved for use in most countries including Canada, the U.S., and the EU. In the EU, it is not recommended for consumption by children"

Potassium Citrate: "is chiefly employed as a non-irritating diuretic"

acesulfame potassium: "calorie free artificial sweetener"

This is why you're going to find resistance. I'm glad you found something you enjoy, but there are a lot of people here who have found that artificial color, flavor and so on is detrimental to their health.

Why is this posted in all the forums?? I find this odd, why push the Diet Rite so hard at us? Why say it has Liquid Splenda, then say it doesn't count as one of the 3 allowed daily? Either it is sweetened, or it isn't. Can't have it both ways.

I just wanted to state that on my first attempt on Atkins, I drank Diet Rite and it stalled me big time...I only drank one a day or every two days! I also notice when I consume things like that, I want more sweets.

Not telling anyone they shouldn't , but that for some it has its consequences.

Interesting thread to resurect Bazie. It really highlights the circular nature of an online support community, and perhaps helps people to realize that whatever problems you are having, someone else has shared those same problems.

Also, I miss Rich. =/
