Default You HAVE to read THIS

I wrote about atkin's on my Blog, and even linked this website and a link to purchasing DANDR. I went through all the basics of Atkins, and look what one guy wrote. Noted he is 19, so of course he knows everything. haha. -Sec

I am going to be blunt. I totally disagree with all low carb diets. First of all, it was created because Atkins knew that Americans are lazy as a whole and that this is the perfect way to lose weight without actually working for it, in a healthy way. If you want to be healthy, eat a bowl of pasta or whatever else that is high in carbs, and go to the gym. Your body needs carbs to properly give nutrients to the muscles and to give you energy on a daily basis. Of course it depends on what you eat while on a low-carb diet, but if it's everything in the meat group, your cholestrol and saturated fat are going to rise and rise. I am just trying to inform. I've done lots of research on eating and exercise; i go to the gym 5-6 times per week. Good luck in whatever you decide

HERE WAS MY RESPONSE....I hope it was good!

It's SO CLEAR YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS BOOK. Ok, I know that sounds very direct (no offense intended), but there is simply no other way to put it. I'm wondering if you even read all of my post! One question, Have you read the book? I'd rather not put all that refined stuff in my body when i can eat healthy and natural. Oh yeah, have you read the book? Maybe if you did you would see past some misconceptions. You might even see how test after test group shows that people who follow this eating lifestyle over long (and short, like as in one month!) periods of time actually LOWER there cholesterol and blood pressure CONSISTENTLY. How many people have you heard of in the news that suffered from this from going on ATKIN's? I can't ever think of ANY, ever.

I've even talked with my mother about talking to her doctor about this eating plan since heart disease runs in our family, and she has high triglycerides. After all of the research I have done I feel she would show results at her next check up. What sane person who had not triple checked there facts would suggest putting there own mother at risk? Sure there is speculation by doubters, always has been though, despite what the studies show. Poeple will beleive what they want to beleive. I personally beleive medical test results and not hearsay.

Once again, have you read the book? There is a lot more to it physically than "Don't eat pasta and bread". This book is linked above, if you are interested, in case you are since you said you are into information on eating and excerize. I appreciate your trying to "inform", but I don't think you can unless you know what you are informing against. Also, people who do Atkin's as outlined by his book and not some frankenstein self concocted version of it, excersize regularly and drink up to 200 oz of water a day. Entire chapters are devoted to how the body inefficiently turns the nourishment on Atkin's into Energy. "Inefficiency" is a *good thing. Your body has to convert your nourishment into energy, instead of having quick carbs to cause blood sugar spikes and lows. This creates a metabolic advantage, or long story short, your body burns more calories because of the output in converting your nourishment into energy....all the while having stable blood sugar...no meltdowns.

Alright on another note, You might be assuming that Atkin's knew American's were lazy nd looking for a quick fix. Let me reassure you and anyone else doubting out there that atkin's is no quick fix, it's a lifestyle/lifelong choice filled with a large variety of flavorful, natural and whole foods. Your stereotype of Atkin's lifestylers is dead wrong. Again, no offense intended, or taken. Poeple on Atkin's are levelheaded, goal oriented, healthminded people who have done their research and are deicated to being healthy and losing weight slowly and steadily. Just look above at the link to the message board in my original post! Try telling me that community of hundreds are like the rest of the world desperatly looking for the next quick fix because they are lazy. I must stand up for Dr. Atkin's, God rest his soul, as he was a pioneer popularizing an eating lifestyle that made complete sense when you know the facts....despite the criticism, and to me is a hero to many, many people.

I did change my response to include that excersize is also a mandatory part of Atkin's. And i was very tempted to make a "you are only 19 comment", but I decided against it, as it didn't really help my actual point. But yeah, that's why i made the comment here. Darn know it alls. lol.

Yeah, I remember being 19 and thinking I knew everything too!

Good job putting it to him. I doubt he'll come around and see our side until he hits 40, is 100 pounds overweight, his muscles have turned to flab, and he's sitting on the sofa wondering what the best way is to lose weight.

You might want to put in there that the folks who cater to the "lazy" people are the ones who peddle magic diet pills, magic diet shakes and bars, etc.

Every person I have ever run across who is opposed to the Atkins WOE has NEVER read the book. All they do is repeat what they have heard others say, and it's always misinformation. At the grocery store the other day, the young man who took my groceries to the store said something about Atkins being "unhealthy" because you need carbs. When I explained to him what you eat on the Atkins WOE, he seemed genuinely surprised. Again, he's only repeating what he's heard everyone else say. And that's what this young man was doing who responded to your journal entry.

I started out like this. I had not read the book, but just "knew" what Atkins was all about. So one day I decided to prove all the Atkins dieters wrong and started eating only protein all day long. As you know, that is NOT the Atkins WOE. Next, I decided to prove everyone wrong by following the diet as the book explains. Well, I proved myself wrong.

People don't know how to think for themselves anymore. Rarely does a person question what the "authorities" say nor do they seek out truth. People seem content to follow whatever the media is the loudest about.

You did very well. The entire world, in its hope for settling down in one spot, decided to become agricultural. Man had been hunter/gatherers naturally for thousands of years, and was quite healthy for it, then boom! we switch to a high carb diet and lo and behold, we become diseased.

What these naysayers just can't get their minds around is the fact that man thrived on a low carb diet for thousands, perhaps even millions of years (earliest man). Archaelogy has proven ancient hunter/gatherers were much healthier than modern man whose primary food is grain-based. Of course, civilization and living in close proximity has compounded the disease issue, but as we know now, diet alone can completely improve many diseases, which tells me that what we eat is the most important factor.

We DO NOT need several grams of carbs a day. We have ancient ancestors to prove that. I'll stick with their wisdom, thank you.

I love seeing Atkineers band together!

I hated being 19. I was as righteous-sounding as the little kid who answered your blog. *shudder* My sense of fashion was better then, however.

You handled it well. Great thread, everyone!
