Two Studies Vindicate Atkins Diet

The Diet Really Does Help People Lose Weight

Save It Email It Print It
(AP) NEW ORLEANS A month after Dr. Robert C. Atkins' death, his much-ridiculed diet has received its most powerful scientific support yet: Two studies in one of medicine's most distinguished journals show it really does help people lose weight faster without raising their cholesterol.

The research, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, found that people on the high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate Atkins diet lose twice as much weight over six months as those on the standard low-fat diet recommended by most major health organizations.

However, one of the studies found that the Atkins dieters regain much of the weight by the end of one year.

Atkins, who died April 17 at age 72 after falling and hitting his head on an icy sidewalk in New York, lived to see several shorter studies that found, to researchers' great surprise, that his diet is effective and healthy in the short run.

Although those reports have been presented at medical conferences, none until now has been published in a top-tier journal. And one of the studies in the journal lasted a year, making it the longest one yet.

``For the last 20 years that I've been helping people lose weight, I've been trashing the Atkins diet without any real data to rely on,'' said Dr. Michael Hamilton, an obesity researcher who was not part of either study. ``Now we have some data to give us some guidance.''

Now, he said, he would neither trash it nor endorse it. ``I'm going to say I don't know. The evidence isn't in,'' he said.

Just an FYI, you cannot/shouldn't be posting this article, the link is fine but the following line says you cannot copy and paste the article, just a heads up.

Thanks for the FYI. I was concerned as a new person to this woe. I wanted to know feedback to alieviate fears that I have that you can lose wt on this diet and keep it off. That I can look forward to this article being wrong. That all of this hard work is going to be lost. At this stage where I am at, I do worry and this response didn't help, other than to make me feel ashamed .
I have read a lot of articles that have been posted and I did not feel that putting this on here was too damaging. I sincerely apologize to all on this forum!

Thank you for the information very interesting! I hope He would have been alive to see how Atkins has helped people, and that scientist and MDs are recognizing the diet as safe.

If you don't make lifestyle changes, you will regain weight no matter how you lose it. When you work the program correctly, the weight will stay off.

Atkins is like exercising. If you stop, you lose the benefits.

The medical profession already treats obesity as a disease. The problem is, they don't treat it as if it's a chronic disease. Chronic diseases like diabetis stay with you once you have it, it stays with you. You can treat it but you can't cure it (not yet anyway). If you stop treating your diabetis, the complication associated with it will arise. People with diabetis have to learn to incorporate diabetis treatment into their lifestyle.

The same goes for Atkins. Most people on Atkins learn that their bodies are carbohydrate intolerant which leads to obesity. Atkins treats this condition but does not cure it. If you are carb intolerant, you will always be carb intolerant. Preventing obesity from recurring requires incorporating Atkins into your lifestyle, which is why the people on this board refer to Atkins as a "Way of Life" or a "Way of Eating" and not as a "diet".

Atkins as a "diet" as commonly understood by people does not work.

Thank you so much for your input Matawguro. You really helped me to look at obesity in a way that is life long treatment and effort. Thanks to all others for your advice.

I was having a very bad depressed day yesterday and I was feeling very over whelmed. Didn't mean to be so....

My intent was not to make you feel ashamed, I just know from personal experience that posting things that are copywrited not to be reproduced can have bad effects
