can an enquiring englishman ask what beef jerky is like? Taste, texture etc

I know what it looks like as they sell it in my local tesco (supermarket) but the carb count is too high on their particular brand.

Sugar! You need to find a good meat market that cures its beef minus the artifical additives. If you're ever in Yelm, Washington, there's an excellent place for jerky! I am going to make my husband go buy me some this month when he's up that way for a wedding. *lol*

Jerky so good you'd put your honey on a plane for it... *lol*

my sis has a dehydrator, and I've thought about it... tried making my own in the oven.. but it's a lot of work... and I'm lazy.. the only good thing about making my own is I can control the quality of the beef....

oh.. jerky is just dehydrated beef... like they ate on the trail in the wild west days here in the US....

I agree, Peytonn! For crying out loud, the ranchhands ate better Atkins than we do. *LOL*

oh richt.. I didn't really get into the taste/texture much...

bought beef jerky is sometimes so tough you HAVE to cut it into tiny strips across the grain with scissors to EAT it at all....

the taste largely depends on seasoning... you can buy peppered (even the black peppered is hot to me)... teriyaki (sp).. my favorite but the most carbs so I don't eat it anymore....

the texture really DOES depend on the beef... if I buy a good london broil and slice it really thin and do it myself.. it's good... but last time I put too much salt... and ended up throwing up from SALT.....

you can buy commercial seasoning packs for it.. but they mostly contain too sugar as well...

and here in the South.. there's a lot of hunters.. deer hunters.. and LOTS of them make deer jerky.....meat processing places will also make it with ground meat (I don't like that all)... but they will make the ground meat in sticks or strips like the commercial SLim JIM stuff they have here

I buy jerky from Meijers here in Michigan. They have a kind that is made with Splenda and has 0 carbs, it is packaged, not fresh. It has a slight aftertaste, but it does the job. It isn't as good as fresh jerky from a meat market.
