| Some people say don't eat soy until the "bean" part of the ladder... But I think you can do it a little earlier if you count the carbs. Also watch out for "sweetened" soy milk...it uses sugar which has a high GI. I buy WestSoy Unsweetened soymilk. BTW Atkins is also "a long term eating plan" A lot of us have been at goal for years. I don't eat anywhere near Induction-level carbs but I don't eat like I used to either. |

Other soy products would become 'legal' on the legume rung of OWL.

There is a health caution about soy. There have been many article touting the benefits of soy protein in a diet. And these articles have been based on studies that have looked at the Asian diet. What these articles DON'T mention is that the Asian diet is high in fermented soy products. Furthermore, these articles don't mention that there are studies that have shown soy to interfere with your thyroid function, causing it the thyroid to slow its function. Atkins Diabetes Revolution is the only low carb book, to date, that I have read that mentions this soy-thyroid link. Yogurt can be added during the Dairy Rung of OWL.

| Yep, ditto what Sarah said. I steer clear of soy almost completely. Occasionally, I will have some of DH's bread with some soy in it, but most people who are hypothyroid do not want to consume any soy, as it will make the situation worse. People with normal thyroids should also not consume soy in excess, in my opinion.
