Default What should my goal weight be?

I have just posted a new FAQ under this title. I repeat it here:

-----------------------

Making a judgement about your goal weight is not easy. There are many tables and online calulators that offer a theoretical optimum. They can intimidate as well as enlighten.

This is a good place to start:

http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm

Enter your figures and see what it suggests. This site is good because it offers an acceptable range; and because it offers some sensible advice on what you should weigh.

There are exceptions to these rules:

Don't tell Arnold Scwartznegger he's fat because he doesn't hit the target mark for his height.

All of the British Rugby Team are clinically obese according to the tables, and they are sportsmen of international status playing a game as tough as American Football.

But do be realistic - most of us are normal, and the normal range targets will be about right for almost all of us.

As you progress, you may want to be more scientific about Body Fat and Body Mass Index (BMI), try this site:

http://www.mybodycomp.com/

It asks for your weight, height and many more measurements - for your trouble it returns a lot of data on your body shape and composition.

But in the beginning http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm gives you a sensible target range.

You may choose to set yourself an achieveable target right at the top end of acceptable, then review it when you see how effective a properly conducted Atkins programme can be. You may also want to set yourself staging posts on the way, then you can pat yourself on the back as you reach them.

Good luck, and do remember there are lots of folk on this board to offer you advice and encouragement.

I've been to http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm before. It told me that my goal weight is pretty much right on for my height and age. I think that some people have unrealistic weight goals, especially for their present ages. I will be 49 next month and I know that I probably shouldn't try to weigh what someone who is in their 20's should weigh. Just my opinion.

Hehe, I never thought I would have set my goal to high !!!
Well, medically seen it was right on, but when you look at what most people would chose to weigh I can set my goal a bit lower, it says 143, that's quite interesting.

I think you are right, Betty. I wonder on what medical grounds they decided to write an aging factor into the equation form women, but not for men?

Men Ideal BMI = 0.5 * kg/m^2 + 11.5

Women
Ideal BMI = 0.4 * kg/m^2 + 0.03*Age + 11

Your looking absolutely fantastic. If your feeling as soon as your looking I wouldn't stress about a goal at all.
Keep up the good work and by the way, thanks for being so supportive on this board.

No stress - I contentedly sat at 208 lb for nearly a year. I have finally dropped to 200 lb which gives me a BMI of 25 - acceptable.

My People's Choise Ideal weight is 192 lb, now 8 lb on someone my size is next to nothing - I know where it is - all on my belly. You see, I can see me without the shorts, and your not going to! And I can prod, pinch and squeeze - I know where that half stone is!

But I will get rid of it, and maybe even into 36 inch waist trousers.

Such a vain man!
