Default Question about calories

Hi Cleochatra,
I have read your comments on calories. My question is – I have been on the induction for about 4 weeks now and only lost 2.5kg (about 5 pounds), which is not a lot (according to me). Previously, when I went on Atkins, I would loose about 4-5kg’s (± 10 pounds) during the first 4 weeks. Now, during the last week, I’ve reduced my calorie intake and that’s where the 0.5kg came from. (It does not show in my ticker, because I started my ticker the day I joint ADBB)

So, can you please explain why we should not count calories during Induction? It seems to work for me at this stage …
PS: After indulding last night, the scale went into the other direction. Will try to never do that again!!!

Default Re: Question about calories

you seem to have not understood the induction chapters of your Atkins. It said to not worry about calories when you START induction. You eat the fats and proteins to get into ketosis. then following the rules of induction with your ketosis appetite supression you should be eating less food therefore less cals too to satify your hunger at the time you eat? Are you paying close attention to your hunger when you sit down to eata meal or snank? Or do you just make your menu make surte you are under on your carbs' limit and then eat it all? that is a very very hard lesson for newbies to learn we do not eat cause we can, cause their is room in our belly food on our plate nor carbs left in our budget. We satify our hunger at the time we eat and stop period. the only exception to that is if the 6 hr rule has to be applied.

Default Re: Question about calories

Dr Atkins never said calories don't count read the FAQ at the end of chapter 11 it cleearly says if cals eatten exceed cals expended from all sources you will gain weight.

Dr Atkins controls your cals because he felt that by controling your carbs fro you with his restrictions you intern would controlk the amount of proteins and fats since they are very statisfying in and of them selves. So he controls the carbohydrate cals and you with appetite suppression conterol the amount of protein and fat calories you consume by listening to your hunger and only feeding it.

That is the reason frankenfoods are a very big dander too. Dr Atkins never invisioned a 3000 caloeie cake withonly 24 net carbs. when you decided to have cake when he created his play if you indulgesd in cake to stay ion your carb limit you had to eat a very very small ( less then 1/24th of the cake for those same 24 carbs) piece and your cals from caske were held in check.

think about that if you decide to include any frankfoods in your Atkins.

Happy low carbing

2.5 kilograms is really pretty good for induction! Induction states that, depending on your metabolism, you'll lose approximately 10% of the overall weight you wish to lose. You look pretty dead on there!

As for why you didn't lose more when in the past you did, our bodies change so much over time. Adding to this, our female fat cells are programmed to get us through a famine, and so when we put ourselves in a famine state our fat cells are trained to hang onto anything it can and convert it to fat.

This is also why you don't want to count calories in induction. Your fat cells are snickering and think, "YEAH! There she goes again, starving us! Well we'll show her!"

Adding to this, in induction the onus should only be on eating properly and being satisfied, but it's also about de-tocing from all the crudb we've been putting into our bodies all this time. Atkineers have enough to worry about in induction let alone the added and unimportant (for the moment certainly) need to count calories.

The temporary weight gain is more likely than not due to sodium intake and water retention. Don't worry about that. Be on guard, however, for the cravings to kick in. Those will be pretty killer if you're not careful. And, as 2big says, be especially aware that blood sugar drops at night causing you to want to especially eat after a junk-paloosa.

Are you exercising at the moment, perchance?

Hi 2big,
Seems to me that I am doing something wrong. I try to keep the carbs as low as possible, but I think the binging part of me does not understand. Yes, now you know something about me … I am a binger (don’t tell anyone) .

At this stage I am staying on the diet and in ketosis, but then I get to a stage (like last night) and just cannot control my eating. Must say, I have not cheated – I binged on steak and salad!! But the point being, I felt guilty about it and the scale also told me so!!

I will try to listen to my body and only eat when and if I am hungry, and only eat enough to satisfy. Hope this will work. Well, something’s got to give at some stage!!

Default Re: Question about calories

oh night time eating has to do with lighting did you know that?

turn up the lights and only eat in a brightly lite area doing nothing but eating. when you ate and type or watch tv you are not even aware that you ate ansd your brain doesn't send signals back to tell your hands and mouth to stop the tummy is not hungry any more.

Also drink a huge glass of water and wait 20 min to see if you were thirsty or hungry. if youstill got the hunger 20 min later thewn fix a hig fat snack like an ounce of cream cheese and flavor it with whatever low carb flaovrings or extrats you want. then slowly eat it and allow the stuff to be played with in your mouth by your tongue on the roof of your mouth ( did you know thewre are fat receptors in the mouth) that will trigger pleasure chemicals in your brain and soon you should be feeling anything but hunger. if you need to repeat this in a couple of hours know you need to save your 4 ounces of chees for late night. I used my cream cheese in one ounce blocks flavores divided into 4 small blobs and frozen for later use. allowing the blob to melt in your mouth gives those fat sensors more time ans slows down the rate and number you consume.

Also start keeping a notebook journaling the 5 W along with your foods like what you wwere feeling before during and after eating ang 30 min later, who you were with, where you were, why you thought you should eat that food. soon you will see triiggering events. for me it was 2 different ones a food celery and a person I was eating a meal earlier with. I stopped them both and my binges stopped.

{{Cleochatra}} Oh, how I know that the body changes. Having my last baby at 35 was the eye opener. With the first one (10 year earlier) within 6 months I was back to my pre-baby weight. Now, after 15 months, I am not even close!!

Like you said, nighttime is the worst time for me, but I will be careful and watch out for those cravings – not to give in!!

Exercising is a non-existence at this stage. But, some good news, Karin and I (my sister, also on ADBB) are starting our “big walk” on Monday. We are so lucky that we have each other. So, hopefully the pounds will start coming down.

{{2big}} After thinking about it, you are absolutely right!! We sat in front of the TV and before I knew it, I was so uncomfortable, I could not move. LOL!!

I am also going to spread my meals more even during the day and try not to eat too much at dinner. At this stage I am only eating 2 meals – breakfast at about 10 and then dinner, with a snack in between at about 15h00. I know this is wrong, but I was trying to keep the calories low!

And the second thing, I am going to keep a journal to try and find the times and reasons why I binge.

I will keep you guys up to date with my findings (and weight loss)

Thank you for your positive advice!!
