Question Why Atkins??

I've been in induction for two weeks and have lost 10 lbs, so I'm happy so far.

However, I have a question. Why are you all choosing Atkins?

I have been able to lose that much through 'diet' and exercise on other programs, as I'm sure, if one is disciplined and determined, everyone could.

What are the pros of Atkins over any other diet or "lifestyle"

Could ask you the same question. If you were successful on other programs why did you choose Atkins? For me...no brainer. I hate to cook. I hate to measure. I hate to starve myself and count calories. But, I love how this way of living makes me feel!

I have ultimately failed every other diet because I'm always hungry when I try other diets. I've also found that I can lose weight with other diets, but that's only because I'm practically starving myself. Once I've lost weight, I start eating "regularly" again and it all comes back on. With Atkins, I'm eating as much now as I will be when I'm at my goal weight. I'm not hungry, I'm not tired because I'm not getting enough to eat, etc.

I had heard alot about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot and see if I really could burn fat faster. Plus I love mayonaise!!!

I didn't lose a single pound with other dietas and excersice, and i was starving. I like to eat and not feeling hungry. Atkins lets me feel satisfied with the food and still lose weight.

I'm diabetic and other programs will let me lose weight, but not while controlling my diabetes.

simply put, this way of eating allows me to eat almost decadently (sp?) and lose weight. I can enjoy cheeses, meats of all kinds, eggs and bacon, mayo, you name it.

secondly the diet puts you into lipolysis and you will experience the side effect of not being hungry. ask any number of folks who have been true to this way of life and they will tell you that this way of eating causes a curbing of the appetite. I lost weight on low fat diets, low calorie diets, etc. combined with exercise, but ultimately I was starving and miserable. you can only go so far in that kind of misery on willpower alone.
with atkins that starving feeling is eliminated. now, i can concentrate on keeping my fluid intake up, exercising more, and enjoying this time instead of suffering through a grueling starvation period.

Congrats on your loss.

I understand where you could think that because something worked for you, it would work for others. It certainly sounds simple - burn more than you consume. However, the body is kinda complex and that 'truth' doesn't hold out for everyone.

I'm very well aware of the perception that if you can't lose weight with a low calorie diet and exercise, you're doing it wrong. I can't count how many times I heard something along the lines of you're still eating too much, or you're not exercising enough, or you're not giving it enough time, or you must be lying about what you're doing, because if you were honestly doing what you say you'd be losing like a mad dog. Heck, I even thought that myself.

I gave it over two years. I gave it 800 calories a day. I gave it 5 hours a week in the gym. I lost about 10 lbs. So, to answer your question, I chose Atkins because I wanted to lose more than 10 lbs and before I died.

In about half the time, I lost 5 times as much weight. My tryglicerides have been cut in half. My blood glucose is back in normal ranges. My blood pressure has dropped. My asthma has improved to where I don't require daily meds. And I'm finally able to grow fingernails. Those are my pros...

Default Re: Why Atkins??

I have to admit:

I picked up a copy of DANDR in January 2002 on a whim. I tried for years to lose weight .. I ended up hungry and frustrated and FAT.

So I picked up the book and thought "man, this guy has an attitude" .. he virtually guaranteed that if I followed *his* plan, I'd lose weight. So I figured, what the heck, I'll give him 2 weeks.

Well that was 4 years and 40 pounds ago. I love this WOE!! I am a carnivore to the core! And this woe satisfies me like nothing else! I don't miss all the starchy veggies and fruits I used to eat that left me hungry! I don't miss SUGAR at all!!

I eat the foods that satisfy and give my body the strength it needs to perform at its best! I am going on 50 and no one can believe it!! Not even me!! I run 30-35 miles a week now (I was never an athlete prior to Atkins!) and I feel better than I did when I was 20!!

I am a walking/talking billboard for Atkins!!
