Default cups or scale

I am curious to what people think- I was advised in the beginning of this wol to buy a scale- which i did and use, but i know many people measure their veg intake with the cup.
now obviously a cucumber weighs more than lettuce- so am i able to have 2 cups of cuke or should i use the scale and measure the amount in grams.
there is a polish cuke salad recipe with dill and sour cream that i am interested in making and i am wondering what a serving should be.
thanks.

I use both. However, be aware that cup measurements don't translate to gram/weight measurements. That is, 8 ounces cup (fluid) measure is not the same as 8 ounces weight measure.

So if you do use the scale to weigh your foods, use the USDA website as your reference because it gives the gram measures with their cup equivalents.

USDA website:
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Per USDA website, 1 cup sliced peeled cucumber is 119 grams.

I have a ?
My step daughter was just found to be celiac. For her brother's birthday I attempted to make for her a vanilla cake. It called for 14 oz of rice flour so I weighed out 14 oz. It was horrible. Do you think they were asking for measured 14 oz or is it just a really awful cake, she really was not happy.

Thank you for the great weight vs cup measurment links. I have a scale I love and I felt as though I was cheating myself going by volume and not by weight on vegetables.

If you got recipe from a cookbook, read the introduction pages of that book. Most books will tell you how they measured their ingredients (confusing isn't it?) For example, some books will tell you that the "egg" they used for all the recipes is a USDA Grade A large egg. Others will tell you they used USDA Grade A Medium eggs. These books will also tell you if they used volume measurements or if they used weight measures for the dry ingredients (even more confusing!) I remember made a recipe from a British book, so I weighed the dry ingredients. I ended up using more of the wet ingredients to compensate. Then I re-read the introduction---the author preferred using the American volume measures for the recipes. So I used the volume measures the next time and I didn't have to adjust the wet ingredients.
