Default A question for the joggers/runners

I hope this is the place to post the question, anyway, I am having a problem with my socks while I run. I just bought new running shoes and they were pretty pricey but they are great, but, I am having a problem with what feels like my socks are bunching up when I run. It usually starts at about 20 minutes in, I can usually take it until about 30 minutes but then after that it gets really painfull. What I dont understand is that my socks are quite tight fitting, but it seems right under the toes a crease is created while I run and since I just bought these running shoes- I need to wear them! What can I do?? thanks, oh ya, another thing- I tried with no socks and I got really aweful blisters on my big toes.

what kind of socks are they? I invested in a couple of pairs of nice expensive running socks and am so happy I did. Make sure yours are not cotton, when running, cotton is not your friend. Also, you might try posting this question at coolrunning.com, they are very helpful.

Very interesting problem...I haven't seen this one but here goes...I'd go down to your local "Sock" store and take you shoes, try on socks with them and see which one feels better after you walk/jog around in them.

Or... just purchase different kinds of socks (tall short medium) and experiment one day and see which is best.

I have encountered sock eating shoes (from the heel end) and you may just need to tighten up the laces on your shoe...It seems your foot may be moving around in the shoe causing your problem.

I hope this helps.

First off, never run without socks! OWWEEE!!

Go to a running store .. they have the perfect socks. I love the ones made with Cool Max .. it wisks away sweat from your feet.

I have this problem when walking (for exercise). It happens with various, very different, pairs of shoes. I think, in my case, it's because I have long-but-narrowish (in other words, non-standard) feet. I just have to try different socks. "Better" socks are not always better. In fact, my nice, thick, absorbent-cotton athletic socks, that seem to fit so nicely, are some of the worst for bunching inside my shoes. But then again, another set that's pretty thin does the same thing.

I do my best to buy socks on sale & at discount places, because if they don't work for me I haven't wasted too much money. If they do work, then I remember them and buy more. (Even if the discount place is out of them and I have to pay full price at a specialty store.)

Regular socks will bunch up esp. around your ankles where they rub against your shoes.
I buy "ankle socks" but i do like the cotton because they are a little more cushy than "running" socks which are usually thinner.
My socks basically look like this: http://www.socaroo.com/Images/ankle.JPG

You just have to expert with different socks, but if you're having pain, your shoes might be too small.

Yup nothing better then a Pair of running socks Mine are very thin and have a band around the arch that is even tighter to keep the sock in place. I love them and they don't rub or Bunch up I find the thicker the socks the worse the Problem with bunching and blisters is. Go for a thin stream lined tight fitting sock that has cool max to help with wetness.

YAY socks a good sock makes all the difference really.

I'm really wondering about the shoes. I once bought shoes that were too wide, and that caused this exact same problem. You want your toes to fit snuggly, not tight, but with not a lot of extra room. If you try the shoes on and feel that your toes have a lot of room, then go for a narrower width. If your feet move around inside the shoe then the socks will normally roam. Just a thought.

Seconding buying running socks. They're ribbed through the middle of the foot facing the toes, so they really grab your foot. I got mine at Target and found they give a lot of support, and because they're tight, they don't slip around.

Running shoes should be a full size bigger than your street shoes, in order to protect your toes. Trust me .. I have first-hand PAINFUL knowledge of what happens to toenails if your shoes aren't the right length ... blood collects under the nail and you eventually lose the nails completely! TALK ABOUT PAIN.

Since I've purchased bigger running shoes, my toenails have completely grown back and they are happy as clams!! AND PAIN-FREE TOO!
