leaky water bottle tip

I found the perfect water bottle--Rubbermaid HydroGear. 32.oz (950 ml). It is small enough to carry around all day and only has to be filled twice to get all my required water in. It also fits in the drink carrier in my car so I have no excuse not to drink my water ( I spend a lot of time driving) I put a rubber band at the top for the first fill-up, then move it to the bottom when I fill it again. Unfortunately it is not leakproof as it says on the front and sometimes when drinking, I was getting soaked on the chest. I finally thought of putting plumbers tape on the threads and voila! no more leaking. Plumbers tape is a white thin plastic plumbers use for leaks and it needs to go several times around the threads. Thought this might help someone else with the same problem.

Nalgene bottles are GREAT for water too... they're typically 32 oz. (though you can get smaller ones) and absolutely leak proof. And break proof -- trying running one over with your car, or dropping it from the roof of a building -- it will be fine (seriously). They come in wide or small mouth lids, and if you get the wide one you can also get a splash guard if you're going to be drinking in the car or while exercising (that way you don't get water on you).

I love mine -- I have 4 of them (one for house, one for car, one for work, and one for hiking/camping/climbing)!!

Yeah, I've read about that before (it's kind of along the lines of people saying it's unsafe to re-fill water bottles you buy, which is not true http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/petbottles.asp).

Most of the research done is on the old Lexan used in the 1980s and not on the current Lexan that Nalgene uses. You can go to www.nalgene.com for more information about the safety of their products. I've been a firm believer and have used mine daily for 4 years now!

They dont get that stale smell to them after a while do they???

Walmart has those too but I think a different brand they also have 64oz ones, there bigger but good, thats what I need to get.

Sandi - the Nalgene bottles do not get a weird smell or taste no matter how long you use them (seriously one of mine I've had for 4 years and it's as good as new!). That's one of the great things about them.

I cannot speak to the Rubbermaid bottles as far as retaining smell/taste.
