I think it depends....If you use a weight loss diet as a means of losing weight, in order for you to go back to eating "normally" (ie: the way that made you fat in the first place), then yes, I can see it leading to obesity. However, if you use the weight loss diet as a means of losing weight and as a means of developing food and lifestyle habits that will help you maintain a normal weight, then it most likely won't lead to obesity.
I've been here at ADBB long enough to read posts that say "I can't weight until I reach ______ pounds. Then I can get off Atkins and eat normal again." Okay....but if "normal" eating is what got you fat, why go back to fattening diet? Additionally, it seems self-defeating and a waste of time, to me, to go through the effort of losing weight, only just to gain it back again.
If you read through the Maintenance forum, you'll see that the successful maintainers are the folks who have made this low carb 'diet', into their lifestyle.
