Default Question about family members not on Atkins

I am wondering how healthy it is for my family members not following Atkins. My hubby, sons and daughter are all thin. They basically eat what I eat, except I do make them their potatos (sometimes) and they have their bread. (Not as much as they used to though) as well as whatever else they may be eating outside the home. But I am wondering if the extra fat that I may be adding in the meals, along with whatever they are eating outside the home, may be actually hurting them??
I remember when I started Atkins, I made bacon and eggs every morning. My DS loved it. He is like me, a breakfast person. My DH (I found out later) was telling people at work that I was trying to KILL him! LOL I gave him leftover bacon from breakfast as a BLT for his lunch.

I worry about that too Barb. My hubby loves the food I cook, but when he leaves the house he eats all his carby stuff. However, he's lost almost 20 lbs since I've been on the diet...

I've kept to lower fat ways for the other family members...they don't use butter very often, and eggs/breakfast meats are usually just a weekend thing, so it hasn't really affected my guys at all. I've adjusted more for myself and DD than the other way around.

Breakfast is usually eggs with spinach and cheese and something. Bacon or sausage or ham., or sometimes just spinach and cheese. My DS goes to school braggin about his breakfasts LOL. DH is not a breakfast person so he doesn't appreciate it, even though I am doing this by 6am!! They are eating a whole lot more veggies and salads than they used to, so I am thinking that is a good thing. But then I am adding stuff like cream cheese to cauliflower and wondering if that is good for them or not?

I have alway used butter Shelly. Hate margarine. I mean, I don't use a ton of it, but that has always been the spread of choice. Even before I knew how bad margarine was LOL.

OK, like this.
Dinner (mine: (example)
Maybe sirloins or stip steaks wrapped in bacon, or chicken or whatever
broccoli and carrots steamed with butter
salad with dressing of choice
and then they (the guys) will have a baked potato with butter and sour cream and also eat almost a loaf of garlic bread!

I pretty much stick to low carb for my family, but they do have pasta or sandwiches for lunch sometimes. I don't worry about the added fat, because they are eating low carb the rest of the time. I do understand your concern though. I don't add fat to the food that they are eating most of the time. I butter the broccoli on my plate, I add cream sauce only to my spinach etc. I'm interested to hear what other have to say.

My bf is of slight build and he's maintained the same weight throughout the two years I've been on the diet(118 pounds) and he eats fairly similar to me except he takes the skin off his chicken and cuts the fat off of pork chops and steak. He will have carbs when we go out to dinner and occasionally I'll buy him a potato or a bun, depending on what's for dinner.
From the outside he looks fine but I do wonder what changes the added fat has made to his system.

He's doctorphobic though and just talking about a blood tests makes him queasy.

My family eats what I eat plus bread, sometimes potatoes/rice/pasta and dessert. Lately I have been able to trick them a bit - leave potatoes out of the casserole so I can eat it, give just fruits for dessert etc. They haven't noticed much neither have I actually realised how big the changes have been... unless my brother lived with us for a week and told us how weird we eat lol. He always asked "what are you going to eat it WITH"?

Default Re: Question about family members not on Atkins

I don't feel that I have given my family anything to be concerned about. They still eat corn on cob, potatoes, and bread. When I fix the meal, I always ask them if they want anything besides what I am having with it. I always have a salad, meat or fish/and my veggie. If they want another veggie added or rolls...then they say so. I think they are eating healthier now than they did before I started Atkins.

Also, I don't buy the chips, cakes/cookies or other things that aren't healthy. I buy more avacados, berries, other fruits and nuts for snacks/desserts. They haven't complained. They still go to store and buy chips occassionally or order pizza. Not as often, but they are not deprived.
