SkaPaladin will become famous soon enoughSkaPaladin will become famous soon enough
Default Just out of curiosity...

I was in a situation earlier, and I am not sure if I made the right decision.

I was caught in a loop, where I wasn't really able to stop anywhere to eat, as I was pressed for time. Now, there is something I could have done, but either decision I made would have been bad, so I came to ask if I made the right decision.

The choice was a)not eat for 8 hours straight, or b)eat something with a bad carb ratio.

I was supposed to eat at the 6 hour mark, but plans didn't work out in my favor, and I had to get to a wedding rehearsal (my sisters) and that forced me past the 6 hour mark. And my sister had candy, but I knew it would have been a bad idea. But, so was pushing my food intake an additional two hours.

What would you guys have done?

Good for you on not eating the candy (you didn't, right?!?)

You need to organise your own 'Atkins emergency kit' for occasions like these, which will always be cropping up.

I have been known to go into a grocer's shop and buy a small piece of cheese or meat to tide me over till I can get proper food.

There have been a few posts recently discussing what would constitute an emercency kit, do a search for that phrase and you should get some good ideas.
Here is a quote from 2big's response on one of them
Quote:
here is the basic idea of the kit and you can add stuff you think is important to you like a pic of you and DH if being healthy to grow old together was part of your weight loss motivation a pic of your kids if being alive to see them grow up was a reason for you to lose, etc,.

Quote:

Keep an Atkins Emergency Kit ready to jump into action for use as required; pack:

1. some bottles of water to drink at the first sign of stress. This will do several things; one, it will give you a response to the situation that is Atkins friendly; two, it will fill your tummy a bit and delay eating the bad stuff; and three, it will reprogram your "food as a drug" response memories to use water instead (hopefully).

2. a picture of you in those new smaller size ____ and a friendly note from you reminding yourself why it is important to you to be able to wear them. This may help you get a hold of the situation.

3. a written out set of exercises you can do anywhere like isometric muscle contractions or heck even those famous kegel things the ladies were doing in chat a few months ago. Any exercise you can focus your mind on and do will use up the chemicals the stress is producing in a productive manner and deactivate the situation. Just think, your friends are eating cream puffs and you are kegeling. The mental image of that should cause you to laugh out loud and laughter can release stress too.

4. a copy of your goals and reasons to do Atkins as a reminder to again think whether you really want to do what you thought you needed to do. Include a pic of you at your biggest weight and at your smallest weight to help you visualize this.

Now if you still need some food:

5. a crunchie snack food you enjoy like cheese chips, pork rinds, flax chips, nuts, seeds whatever you like. This will give you mouth texture, noise, and chewing action to satisfy several of your "mouth taster" receptors and not just the ones on your tongue.

6. something high fat you enjoy like a small package of laughing cow cheese, creamcheese, macadamia nuts, whatever you enjoy. This will boost your ketosis helping you cutoff any blood sugar driven cravings and still allow you to eat.

7. a salty food you enjoy. Sometimes this will help handle the craving for a sweet. Packaged pickles maybe?

8. a sweet snack as a last resort something you really enjoy (sugarless of course).

Pack this all up like those of us that were Scouts did when we made our survival kits. Make sure you replace what you use and refresh the supplies as needed. For instance, when you drop a size replace the pic and update the note. Keep it handy and make one to take with you or better yet store one at work, in the car, and at home so you always have one at hand.

hehe you beat me to it.

Remember failing to plan is planning to fail! Always plan what ifs like what if I get stuck in traffic what if an emergency comes up what if I'm stuck in the office with that high carb vending machine and snack room... then you will always have your Atkins food availible. Many of us have small coolers or fanny packs with our emergency foods and replae them often to be sure they are fresh and in good supply. Remmeber if you can go to the store for a shake or bar you could buy meat and cheese instead!

better to let the blood sugar get lowewr burning off your body fat then candy blood sugar swings.

Amen on the cheese and water! That has helped me out of a few pickles in the past week.

It's so portable and a cube of chedder cheese is so thick and luxurious that I instantly feel better after having one.

Kudos to you on not giving in to the candy (I'm assuming you didn't but now that I reread your post I'm not sure if that was the route you chose?)

No, I didn't choose the candy route. I chose the 8 hours without eating route. I was just wondering which one would have been worse, and I suppose I did choose the lesser of two evils.

Thanks for the info, guys.

So right, meena!!

To make my cheese last longer I take small bites and let it almost 'melt' in my mouth to allow my tastebuds to get the benefit ! That way it tastes so much more luxurious too! My DH is amazed that I can make an ounce of cheese last longer than the large Danish pastry he is eating!!
