Default Heart racing after eating...

watermelon. This is the first time I had watermelon since starting Atkins 16 months ago. I had 1/4C of watermelon about 15 minutes ago and now my heart is racing. I took my resting pulse, it's up to 96! I'm just sitting at the computer and it's 96! Normally it's about 72.

I'm thinking watermelon is not going to be a food that I can add back to my diet.

Has anyone else had any similar reactions when adding new foods?

I can't eat wheat protein because I begin to wheeze and my nose becomes stuffy.

I never had this reaction before this WOE, so I don't think it's an allergy. Could definitely see it as an intolerance though.

DH thinks it may be beacause of the sugar content of the watermelon. Just not something my body is used to having.

Just know that I'm not going to have any more of it. I didn't like that feeling at all! Now I just hope that's the only reaction I get and no cravings happen.

Could it be a reaction of your body dumping insulin in the blood stream to deal with the sugar in the watermelon?

qbu, I never had a problem with wheat either. I was a big wheat eater: pasta mainly, sauces thickened with flour (because it was low fat), breads, etc.

However, I was also a severe asthmatic on 2 different medications that worked only so-so and I had severe seasonal allergies, requiring 3 medications for 11 months a year. In fact, I was very close to going on allergy shots.

After I eliminated wheat products, my allergies improved to where I take 1 medication for 2 months out of the year. My asthma is gone. I don't wheeze, not even when I exercise anymore. But feed me anything with whole wheat, and I'm wheezing and sniffling.

Think about it ... your system is steaming along on a full tank of fat fuel already released for burning, and in comes a big scoop of glucose fuel which gets lit immediately by a surge of insulin. Ever see what a bed of glowing charcoal does shortly after you pile on something highly flammable??? If your heart doesn't slow down in a short while, consider a Dr., but I've experienced surges like this after sweets or some spicy foods during ketosis, it also makes me feel hot. Try a brisk exercise to burn up the sugar...

Default Re: Heart racing after eating...

Sorry to say, but prolly you HAVE to try this one more time. You need to make sure it happened BECAUSE of watermelon... maybe it was not.. maybe it was just an accident. Just need a second try ( maybe with different combination of other food).

I can not eat watermelon it seems, but I did n't get heart racing only an incurable munchieness that ended in a n off plan day long binge!!! Canalope seems ok in small amounts with higher protein/fat food like cottage cheese or cheese slices. I haven't tried it by its self I was too concerned for similar reaction.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I did try it again with some cottage cheese and had the same reaction to it. Guess watermelon is out. I wasn't a big watermelon eater prior to this WOE, co it's not going to be something that I'm crying about not being able to have, but now know that I can't tolerate it. I'm thinking it's the high sugar content in it.

Again, thanks for your help.
