Default Discovery Health Channel 'You on a Diet'

Tonight I watched the last half of a show (I missed the first half ) called 'You on a Diet' on the Discovery Health Channel.

The first half must have included the WOE, the second half focused on the exercise. I did see some things that intrigued me so I got up and looked up the web site. http://health.discovery.com/fansites...k=fsmain_feat3

It's low carb. I'm sure to appeal to the public and the AMA, ADA, AHA, and other establishments, the saturated fat, trans fats and hydrogenated oils are limited...but ONLY those. It limits saturated fats to 4 grams per serving. I've never paid attention to my fats except for the percentages. So I went and played around in fitday. Other than red meat, everything I eat pretty much falls into that category, including mayonnaise, butter, olive oil, etc.

What's frustrating to me is that Dr. Atkins and his WOE is still regarded as "dangerous" to so many, yet a new book comes out, or a new tv show comes out and it will be all over the media about how wonderful it is. It will be compared to Atkins--we will hear, again, how dangerous Atkins is, how their diet is NOTHING like Atkins, blah, blah, blah. When the reality of it is that once you've gone through all the rungs of OWL as I have, my diet is virtually the same as what they are introducing as "new".

I'm going to be on the lookout for another airing of the show so that I can see the beginning. Did anyone else see it? What are your thoughts?

There are lots of good tips, he makes excellent points (of course, they're excellent because so many of them we use here LOL)

He does allow up to 4 grams per serving of High Fructose Corn Syrup...ACK!
Quote:
Don't buy foods where high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), or another simple sugar, is more than 4 grams per serving, or one of the first five ingredients. You're avoiding simple sugars in foods not just because of the calories but because they induce highs and lows in blood sugar that put you into a cycle of craving more high-calorie foods.
If he recognizes that HFCS and simple sugars induce blood sugar spikes than I wonder why he doesn't limit them even more. Or, even prohibit them except to separate himself from Atkins, South Beach, etc.

Thanks for posting that it was coming on. I jumped up and turned on the television at the start of the program. I had seen the girl Jody and the 44 year old on Oprah Thursday and definitely didn't want to miss the whole program.
I thought it was interesting that the doctor tells them to suck in to measure their waistline. I am much closer to a health waist by doing this, yay! Anyone that hasn't caught the program yet tune in, it is very interesting.

I did go back and catch the first half. I don't think the show is detailed enough for people. They talk about "good fats" but then don't tell people exactly what the good fats are. They just target bacon and the trans fats. Poor misunderstood bacon. Maybe that is to distinguish themselves from Atkins????

The one thing I did think was positive about it was going through the people's kitchens and getting rid of anything in the cupboards with sugar, corn syrup, enriched flours, and hydrolized oils! That just THRILLED me! I'm glad that they recognized the perils of these foods.

I suppose they were a bit vague on the "diet" aspect because they want you to buy the book.

The show, You on a Diet...Is each show promoting the same "diet" or is each diet a little different, tailored to a person's likes/dislikes? I haven't watched the show, but it really looks interesting.

I DID see another show, however, and it was on FitTV I think, where each week a different WOE is profiled and an actual person begins the plan. I saw the French Women Don't Get Fat diet (that looks like a fun way to eat--but there's no way I could control portions with chocolate!), and I'm pretty sure there was a low-carb (probably South Beach) one advertised.

I saw Oprah and forgot to watch the show. But according to Dr. Oz I am okay, but I am only 5'4 with a 32 inch waist. I have always been thick waisted even when I weighed 112 lbs a few years ago........Dawn
