Kimkins is based off Atkins, but it's a very low calorie, low fat, and low carb. It also places no emphasis on exercise - and Kimmer is notorious for espousing the fact that she dropped 120+lbs (something like that) in like 7 months without exercise. Kimmer is also a big fan of water fasts, among other things.

While it worked for Kimmer, I do not believe that severe restriction will work in the long term for the vast majority of people. If it did - none of us would have weight issues because who among us hasn't tried to cut their own throat food wise and failed miserably? Add to that the lack of exercise - you'd be hard pressed to convince me that dropping that much weight without the benefit of maintaining your muscle mass and bone density is a healthy way to go. And when you take the speed at which she lost it into account- I'm sorry ,but you'll NEVER convince me that that's healthy. I'm also not a fan of fasting for any reason other than religious ones.

Kimmer has her own website now and I believe she's charging a fee to be a member. She used to post a *lot* at another low-carb website and all the information on Kimkins is there - and free.

I have seen this mentioned as well and I agree with Brook.

The other point is that as far as I know Kimmers is not a Dr. nor does she any medical training that I knowof

I would really question how healthy it is. It's definately NOT balance. it's low everything.

Yep, Brook you are right. If you know what Yahoo Answers is, she is on the Diet and Fitness answers. It's kinda like a forum, but not. Here's the link to the diet and fitness part.

She is also on low carb friends- one of my favorite sites. Not to stir up trouble but i don't have a problem with some of her ideas. She doesn't think you should eat things like cheese, bacon and chicken wings on a low carb diet. Not to discount the fact that these items help with the diet to help satisfy cravings, but there's no way anyone is going to convince me bacon and chicken wings are healthy- no way, no how. Just my personal opinion. She is however, a little strict for my personal tastes and the exercise thing does bother me , but other than that, I don't have a problem with the diet.

WELL SAID!!!

IMO, its nothing more than starvation. Sure, you can lose weight that way, but who would want to? That's the beauty of Atkins; you can enjoy "luxurious foods" (that's what Dr. Atkins used to say) and lose weight.

Dr. Atkins said exercise is Non-negotiable and he was RIGHT.

Actually, I just joined Kimkins for $60 to find out that it is a starvation diet. That's why I'm back here looking around. There are three different diets: K/E Experiment: protein only (lean protein: egg whites, turkey bacon, chicken & fish) or Kimkins Diet:
0-20 total carbs per day(no fiber or sugar alcohol subtraction)
0-3 cups List 1 veggies per day OR
0-2 cups List 1 veggies + 0-1 cup List 2 veggies per day
Use minimal fat to make your menu work (careful, calories count!)
No alcohol or low carb products (sugar free candy, energy bars, ice cream, frozen meals)

No exercising. Laxatives are encouraged because most people are only eating meat for fast ketosis. Most people post their fitday journals and eat 300-600 calories a day!!! Weight loss is obviously rapid.

The idea of a little less fat and more lean protein is a good idea though. She's charging the $60 so you can "chat" in the forums.

Lower fat might work for another plan, but not for Atkins.

The reason Atkins is a high-fat diet is because our bodies use fat for fuel. If you deprive it your body of fat (from foods), you deprive it of energy. Eating more protein is not beneficial. Excess protein in the body is converted to glucose which ultimately converts to fat and is stored in the body. Excess iron (from too much protein) can also cause constipation. OUCH! 30% protein per day is a healthy intake.

Hmmm. I wonder if the rapid weight loss on this is due to the body cannibalizing the lean body mass while saving it's fat stores? Would love to see body fat analysis of these people.

The body will do that you know...use the muscle tissue before its fat stores if it thinks it's starving. Then, when you reach goal, instead of having sleek muscle, you've got saggy skin and the fat left. Toss in the fact that there is no exercise to actually BUILD lean body mass and you are left with a body that could potentially be a higher percentage of body fat than when they began the program, completely defeating the purpose of a weight loss program. UNLESS the person doesn't care about health risk and only about the number on the scale.
