Exclamation Believing!! Read Plz

Okay so I was working this afternoon and I was talking to one of my trainers today "Jarad" and I told him I was starting my diet tomorrow "Atkins" He said, "Don't, not only does it mess up with your digestive system but your body needs carbs to run on. Look at it like this Dr. Atkins died at age 37."

I basically shut up after that, I want to do it its a personal choice. I mean Couting Cals, and increased exercise led me to my Eating Disorder. Why not give Atkins a try. Ya know?

Oh and did he really die at 37? Or whatever? Does anyone know what thats about?

Ummm...you're trainer's a moron.

Here's a link to Dr. A's obituary from the BBC.

Not sure I agree with the "unlimited" comment in there, but it is what it is, I suppose.

Dr A died elderly (I think in his seventies). He died from hitting his head when falling.
The fact that he was overweight when he died is because he retained huge amounts of fluids due to the medications in hospital. His admission weight was a healthy one.

As for your body needing carbs to run on... well, there's a mass of literature out there that supports the opposite. Plus, most of the people who are success stories on this board are far healthier now (more energy, slimmer, better B/P, better blood sugar levels, better cholesterol numbers) than they were before they started.

To me...taking refined starches and sugar out of your diet in favour of non processed "real" foods and more veggies, can't be too unhealthy!

Maybe your trainer needs to read DANDR before making statements he'd find hard to justify.

Rest assured... you can do Atkins safely and with an easy mind!
Happy losing!

Through a process called gluconeogenesis, your liver produces all the glucose your body needs and you don't need to add any extra.

Here's a quote from Dr. Michael Eades' blog (co-author of Protein Power):
"Not to worry, the body can make glucose from protein and, to a small extent, even from fat in a process called gluconeogenesis (making new sugar) that takes place in the liver. In fact, when it gets going the liver can crank out 200+ grams per day (a little over a cup), which is more than enough for all the glucose-dependent cells even if we weren’t eating any carbs at all. This ability of the liver to make plenty of sugar is what allows the Inuit, the Masai, and other groups of hunter populations to survive nicely for most of their lives on almost no carbohydrates at all. And it is this same ability that makes low-carb diets work as well as they do."

On the 'messing up the digestive system' part: I used to have lots of trouble with being bloated, being irregular and having heartburn lots of time.....before Atkins.
I got nothing like that going on anymore ever since I started this WOE.
Needless to say that all came back instantly when I fell off the wagon, only 2 weeks, but Oh did I regret it !!!!

I too suffered badly from heartburn/indigestion before starting on Atkins and I'm pleased to say I've had none since I began this WOE
Flatulence was another frequent problem...again I've had absolutely none since I began!

Perhaps its all those carbs that your trainer eats that has made him (almost) dyslexic ... DR ATKINS DIED AT 72 NOT 37...okay, not QUITE dyslexic, but close.

Oh and another thing. I've run 5,000+ miles in the past 2 years on Atkins....including more races than Jared could count ... 2 full marathons (26.2 miles each), 3 half marathons (13.1 miles each), and a bazillion 5ks and 10ks and 15ks. ALL ON ATKINS.

My advice: find another trainer.

Hehehe

I love you Betty!

WTG on the Marathons!!! Way cool chica!

Nah I love Jarad but when he said that, it made me feel like when your parents are telling you no, but you know that your right and their wrong on a certain situation. All because they are older. Well no offence with Jarad but I felt like "Oh shes young she don't really know anything about it" Yack yack.

The only thing he is really good for is my server training and telling me which chardine [sp] I am suppose to use.

I started a couple weeks ago, but before I did I read the book (DANDR) and I lurked on these forums. I also asked myself to seriously consider whether I could stick with this if I started. I found this board to be filled with real people who've had success on Atkins and want to share their time and experience to help other people gain success. That's what convinced me to give it a try.

In the last couple months whenever I brought up Atkins to anybody, they immediately started nay saying...spouting "facts". I noticed a trend after a while...none of the nay sayers had read the book. Now whenever anyone comments on my new WOL, I ask them if they've read the book. If they say no, I don't argue with them, but just change the subject. There's no point in discussing it if the other person has no idea what they're talking about.
