Default Consumer Report Articles on Diets

The latest issue of Consumer Reports did research on the latest and greatest "diets" and diet books.
As far as the new books, they reported that there was no clinical study performed on any of the "new" book diets but it was there opinion on what they liked.
As far as the diets themselves, they listed Atkins as the least favorable diet. Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, Ornish, etc... were all listed as better. The ironic thing is that they did mention that Atkins DID lower bad choleserol and tri's better than the other diets, but that the diet was too restrictive for long term attendance. They also mentioned that a lot of the other diets had a high failure rate.
What amazes me is that CR leans towards a diet that is more "balanced" than Atkns, but none of the other diets mentioned (other than Atkins) lowers cholesterol.
Slim Fast... you've got to be kidding! Who wants to drink their meals?

Amazing (and infuriating) how many blinkered people/reporters/medics there are around when it comes to Atkins. I have confidence that eventually time will tell.

Restrictive!!??!! Let's look at Slimfast...you drink 2 of your meals! How is that not restrictive?! Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem provide your meals for you, that equals no choice. Weight watchers lets you eat whatever you want, but you are limited to the amount of points you can have.

Bottom line is, they know nothing about this diet beyond the "restrictive" induction phase. All diets limit you to some extent, otherwise they wouldn't be DIETS!!

Just goes to show you....we're right, they're wrong....okay I'm a little biased!

WebMD did an interesting article on this. I think the most important thing to point out is that Consumer Reports used the Induction and OWL pieces of Atkins in their analysis, not pre-maintenance or maintenance.

This is what cracks me up about these "reviewers". When they look at Atkins, they only look at the Induction Phase. I know this because if they have really done their research they would see that OWL and Pre-Maintenance Phases are much less restrictive and much more balanced than other diets. Furthermore, they fail to report that Maintenance phase is a far more healthy and nutritionally balanced diet than the Food Pyramid.

I hate to say this....well, on second thought I'm NOT hating to say this!

Their OWL phase analysis is wrong. It claims the servings of vegetables/fruits is 6 during OWL---no way. Induction lands you with 3-5 servings of veggies. Rung 1 OWL gives you an additional 3-5 servings because 5 net carbs of the Induction vegetables can be 1/2 cup (like spaghetti squash) to 15 cups (like lettuce.) The Berry rung yeilds 1/2 to 1 serving of raw fruit and some fruits on the "Other fruits" rung will give you 1/2 to 1 serving of raw fruit.

Those articles make me laugh. For people like me who wouldn't TOUCH a veggie ever on a carby diet, Atkins is FAR healthier. When eating my old diet, I literally never ate veggies and fruit. NEVER. Now, I eat veggies daily and am adding in fruit too. I just can't see how any diet that requires you to eat veggies is unhealthy and restrictive

I could never do the other diets - especially SlimFast
