Default In memory of Dr Atkins

You know ... I get so mad ... just recently I've had a few people make comments about Dr Atkins that stick in my craw. They say things like: "Oh yes ... him. He died from his own diet you know!" or "He was dangerous ... he put so much weight back on that he had a heart attack and died". [snarl, growl and a few swearwords I can't print here]. So I have taken a stand. I've decided to do the "I'm sorry to disrupt your delusions with the facts, but ....", and tell them what actually happened. And then I tell them that I lost over 90lbs in 3.5 monts. And I say that as far as I am concerned Dr A is a saint who completely changed my life and rescued me from an early grave! Then I inform them that if they want to speak badly of the Atkins diet, I would prefer it if they did it elsewhere. And if they want to speak badly of Dr A himself, I would prefer it if they didn't do it at ALL.
So ... HERE'S TO YOU DR A! No-one is going to bad mouth you around me and get away with it. One day, when I pass over too, I'm going to bounce up to you and give you the BIGGEST hug ever.
Any of you had the same experience of people just being downright rude about Dr A!

I've heard the "You know he died fat, don't you?" one. I was really surprised, too. She is the sweetest person and usually has not a bad thing to say about anyone.

I think a lot of it stems from society's sick pleasure in watching celebrities fall from grace. We followers of the Atkins plan know how our hero died and will defend his honor to the bitter end. That's all we can do.

Your talk of hugging Dr. Atkins on the other side made me smile. I've felt the same way. I often think about writing Ms. Veronica and telling her about how her husband has changed my life.

Try not to get too bent out of shape about it though, okay? You don't want to come across as a rabid cult member or anything; that tends to be counterproductive. Keep in mind that those who want to know better will learn and those who don't will wallow in blissful ignorance.

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reading it.

Seriously, there was a list here somewhere earlier... people put together old links from the time when Dr. A passed away, about what happened to him and the postmortem info which was made public later. Maybe someone can find it and repost... but documents said he was about 185 lbs shortly before the accident... while in the Hospital however he was in coma and on ventilator with alot of IV tubes so he got severely bloated. Thats why all the idiots start screaming that he died being obese. REAL MORONS indeed.

Well..he did have a heart condition..but it was NOT diet-related and was not the direct cause of death. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/...atements_x.htm AND the man lived to be 72! I know I wouldnt live that long if i didnt start this WOL.
It makes me angry to hear so many misinformed people (medical professionals included) criticize him and the diet..when they dont know anything about the diet. They assume we all sit around eating tubs of bacon fat all day. I eat more vegetables, fish and fowl now than I ever did.....with only the occasional piece of red meat.
He has helped millions of people..and for me personally has given me the tools to get my life back that no other woe has ever provided.
I always calmly correct other people too and if they question it I just remind them they can go to the library and read what he really said for themselves.
So yeah..sticks in my craw too...but what can ya do..people are idiots. lol

PS He IS a saint. I had been praying for help when i stumbled upon DANDR at a garage sale. Best .50 i ever spent.

I just read a biography of Dr Atkins I picked up at a book store sale. It was pretty fair, and I have even more respect for the man now. To have fought for 40 years for what he believed in and never faltered to give people a chance to be healthy, I'm sure that knocked a few years off of his life. Thanks Dr Atkins!
