| elk? wow I bet he was excited and proud of himself... my family has lots of hunters in it and I can't remember ever hearing of one shooting an elk.

| My husband is an avid hunter so we always have a freezer full. He generally kills deert but every once in a while (every few years) he'll get an elk. Venison and elk cook the same way. If you have ground elk (my favorite) I use it the same as hamberger. Speghetti sauce, meat loaf. It's really low in fat so make sure you ad plenty of fat to it otherwise it will taste kind of dry. If it's not ground I use it just like I do steak. My husband likes it just fried in oil. (he dips it in flour but if I'm going to eat it I just fry it plain.) I like it in a stew. I don't have any specific recipes but I think there are probally tons on the internet.

| Thanks Susan I got a few ideas now. Does it taste different? I am not a good cook so maybe this is a dumb question, but how do you add fat? Add butter?

| I have never tried elk - wow! Will you please give us a report on how it turns out? Congratulations to your husband, by the way.

| I don't like it quite as well as deer. It has more of a wild taste. My husband says it's all in the way you take care of it out in the field. This is why some folks don't like it. When we ground it up we added meat lard to it (you get it from a butcher) as we ground it up. But if that wasn't done I would add olive oil to it as you cook it, or butter would work fine too.

| Slow cooked elk roasts in the crock pot are always good. Add onions and veggies if you liike. YUMMMMM! We live on a ranch so we mostly eat beef, but my family hunts so there is quite a bit of venison also. I just cook up the wild meat the same as beef, but if some of it tastes strong I use it in dishes that have extra flavor to balance it out. Congrats to your dad. I'll bet he had a great time. ~ Linda

| those sound awesome. I will be tring the chilli and the roast for sure. Hubby made some burgers tonight with the ground Elk. The place that processed it for my dad mixed elk and hamburger together for the ground. I am hoping that will help with the low fat in it. I find I need around 75-80 percent fat daily to lose weight.
