Default **** Hath Frozen Over: ADA Acknowledges Low-carb

Diabetes Group Backs Low-Carb Diets

FRIDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- For the first time, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has come out in support of low-carbohydrate diets for people with diabetes who want to manage their weight.

The ADA voiced its support of low-calorie or low-carbohydrate diets in its newly published 2008 clinical practice recommendations.

Has the American Diabetes Association endorsed the Atkins diet?

We've heard a growing undercurrent of rumblings over the past month or so that the all-powerful American Diabetes Association (ADA) is FINALLY beginning to consider giving credence to low-carb diets as a means for diabetics to control their health. Much anticipation has been steadily building among supporters of livin' la vida low-carb that perhaps maybe, just maybe, a major breakthrough could be happening within one of the most influential health institutions in the United States upon the release of their new dietary recommendations scheduled for Friday, December 28, 2007.

Edit: **** Hath Frozen Over??? <sigh> Somehow, "Heck Hath Frozen Over" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Well Now. That is a great move in the right direction. And fits with what I expect to happen. Small steps over many years before LC is understood as THE healthy way to live. Still holding on to their low fat I see. Maybe next year they will turn some more.

This will be a fun piece of info to sping on the "Atkins will make your kidneys explode, your cholesterol will shoot through the roof, you'll gain it all back when you quit" crowd.

My mother was told at her last doctor visit that she is pre-diabetic and that the doctor wanted to get a handle on it before it got any worse. He enrolled her in a diabetes education class, guess what she learned about her eating habits... count her carbs and not to exceed a certain number in any given day (sorry I forget how many). She has lost 15 lbs in a month and a half and is actually the reason why I gave a look to the Atkins diet in the first place.

I really is amazing how this way of life has been belittled and outright called all kinds of things but it seems that Dr.Atkins was right all along. Bravo to the good doctor for standing up for what he knew worked. Now, I just have to stick with it and get it to work for me also.

I'll have to print that out and show it my doctor who gave the "Oh really?" stink-eye when I gained weight on her "less than 20 fat grams" a day plan for me.

I have to be honest and say that I used to be one of the naysayers, and made all the claims that it's a fad, it's bad for you, you'll gain the weight back, ect. But that is only because I never did do the plan correctly in the first place, so natch, all that bad stuff happened to me. Most people think the 14-day induction phase (I used to be one of those peeps) is the entire WOE of Atkins. And then they say no one can live that way for life, well duh! That's why it's only for 14 days, lol. Also people that have made themselves sick didn't take a vitamin, which I think is key to getting all your nutriants no matter what kind of plan you follow.

Anyway, it's great to see that low-carb is being recognized, it just re-validated my reasons for making this choice.

Thank you, Robbie. I've just sent off a copy to my brother and his wife and asked him to make a copy to take to his doctor the next time he visits. As I can't count on that happening, I will send their doc a copy, as well. Their doc has scared them to death about me doing Atkins and has told them that they need to FORCE me to go off before I die from kidney failure. He is in the same office with my doc, who approves of everything I have done on Atkins.

Sunny!
