Default A couple questions. Ketosis, eating at night

I know these questions should be posted in the 14 day induction board, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion, not just those who go on that particular part of the board.

1. When should I be going into Ketosis? I am on Day 3 and the stick only came up a very faint purple.

2. Eating at night - is this strongly discouraged? I am OK all day but once 10-11pm hits, I get pretty hungry.

from my experiences on atkins, usually after the 5th day, is when the hunger cravings and "wants" seem to fade. Ketosis depends on the person, dont always trust the sticks, as many on here have said they dont work for everyone. It really depends on the person, Ive eaten at nite and I am fine

You are already in ketosis if they turn any color. It's like being pregnant--either you are or you aren't. Purple just means you are dehydrated.

As for eating at night, I can't do it and not binge. But, that was my old bad habit that I had to break. It's really not good to go to bed on much food. It takes a lot of energy to digest your food and when you sleep your body gears way down. Try drinking water first and wait a few minutes. If it's TRUE hunger, have a protein/fatty snack and then don't eat anything else.

I think my sticks are different than yours and the poster above as the bottle clearly reads that purples means you are in ketosis. No mention of pink or any other colors.

Can't remember off hand. It is one from the hospital which includes different squares that turn colors for different things they are testing for. Ketone's is just one of them.

It took me about 3 days or so to get into ketosis. As for night eating, this is something I used to avoid when I was going for broke and pulling out all the stops with weight loss (you try gimmicky things when you're desperate!). This was until I found that eating at night never put any weight on me to begin with. While I don't prefer to eat a big ol' steak dinner minutes before going to sleep, I'll throw together pared-down things like canned pumpkin head up with some cream cheese/cinnamon/Splenda, or meat-cheese rollups, or maybe a shake.

Your body digests food as efficiently at 10pm as it does at 10am. It DOESN'T MATTER when you eat, your body will digest the food just fine. I think the "no eating after ___pm" myth comes from the fact that people tend to binge/overeat at night. If I followed the never eat after 7pm rule, I'd never get to eat dinner! Follow the rules of Atkins--if you are HUNGRY, eat! If I have an earlier dinner, I might find myself needing a snack, so I do what Sheila does--have something like a piece of cheese, or a can of green beans, or some pistachios. Something small to take away my hunger.

Ditto that julirama723. I have read many articles about that and I think it is a myth too, the problem is not eating at night. The problem is sleeping after you eat, whether it is at night or during the day.

As for the sticks. There is no rule of thumb in there. The conclusion of being dehydrated because of a purple color may not be accurate here as well. It could simply be because of a fatty meal you just ate. Last time I used the stick about 3 weeks ago was dark purple, and I usually drink 10 x 16.9 fl oz water bottles a day (sometimes more) and never drink less than 8 x 16.9 fl oz a day. This is about 135oz to 170oz a day..
