Default Italian restaurant eating!

I'm going to an Italian restaurant tonight for my grandpa's 90th birthday. Any tips on what to eat? What is safe? Besides salad...????

I eat out Italian a lot, though restuarant here may serve different food than they do there.

I usually have antipasti - which includes things like raw vegetables, with a dip of virgin olive oil, goat cheese with oil, garlic and pepper, marinated mozzarella cubes in oil etc, and also bread which I just leave.

My pretty standard main course is Osso Bucco, which is a veal dish, though some places dredge the veal with flour so you have to check about that. It comes with risotto, but I ask for a green undressed salad instead.

Most italian restaurants here also do excellent soups, which are made without flour but with liberal amounts of cream, which are fine too.

Which restaurant are you going to? I've noticed a lot of them now have non pasta dishes like steak and chicken with roasted veggies. Fingers crossed that the one you're going to does! If not, I would probably get salad and maybe chicken alfredo or something and ask if I could substitute the pasta for something they may have that is legal.

Let us know what you choose and Happy Birthday to you grandpa!

Just got home & just in to time to watch the rest of the Giants game My grandpa was so suprised, we all had a good time. It was a "real" Italian restaurant in upstate NY called Bella Luna. I was suprised the food was so good (I am biased living in the Bronx where there are tons of good italian restaurants). For an appetizer I had antipasto & tomatoe, peppers & mozzarella. I had a garden salad and eggplant rollatini (Chris I guess me & you were on the same page) and red wine. Thanks for all your tips they were helpful!

Here's the link to the restaurant if anyone lives or visits Central Orange County in NY, it's on Route 94.
