Default Floored...

I just had an epiphany.

Whenever I actually get the chance I'll watch some recorded tv shows, thanks to my Tivo. My mind keeps replaying one show in particular...Bob Greene on Oprah talking about his new book and how to get and stay slim and healthy. I bought into his theory time and time again. Just a few days ago my husband bought a few containers of Yoplait Light with the Best Life Diet seal plastered right on the front. Heck - Bob says it's ok...it has to be ok, right? I always thought it was the healthiest food I could find if an expert told me it was. Once I checked the label I knew that we've been deceived many times before and it's my own fault I hadn't checked the labels years prior.

Second ingredient - High Fructose Corn Syrup.

I am floored.

Every week I'd bring in a bounty of Best Life food and who knows what it was all filled with. I'm sad actually, feeding my family junk all the while thinking it was the best. How can someone feel ok plastering their name all over products that contain HFCS and many other "toxins" (in my opinion). I have a European friend and she tells me that they don't even have HFCS in foods there. If that is true - we are so far behind in the game. American food companies are killing us and Oprah and Bob Greene talk lovingly about how healthy this food is.

Just sad

We all know Atkins works and is nutritious but sometimes the things we have learned in our lifetime are hard to unlearn, for instance the fact that the food industry is not looking out for us. I love little reminders about how the "health food" industry does not always have our best interest at heart. It only reinterates that healthy low carb eating is the way to go.

I feel your pain, but you've learned a very important lesson. Follow no one blindly. Do your own research, read every label of every food (even if it's been low carb in the past..they can change at any time), and stick with what works for you, even if other's disagree or try to persuade you otherwise.

Now you know. Go forth, (little grasshopper) and prosper.

Makes you wonder if Oprah does any research on the products she promotes....
Hey at least you discovered the lie and now you can fix it! Good luck and stay strong!

Sadly it's where there is money to be made...

When I look at foods that are best for Atkins - they are hard to make money on, hard to store, go off fast - like food is meant to be.

Well done for highlighting this issue - it's very relevant to this WOL.

We don't have the HFCS problem in canada Either..it's a US thing.

If you google HFCS you can find alot of articles explaining why they are so widely used there...in a nutshell basically it's the US governments tarrifs on sugar that force the food companys to use HFCS. they've made sugar far too expensive to force the use of it to help the corn industry or something along that lines.

http://www.accidentalhedonist.com/in...literal_cost_o

that's a really good article explaining it.

That was really interesting. I suspect the price of HFCS will rise now that corn is being used to make Ethanol.

The answer to why manufacturer's use HFCS, however, is simple. People wil buy products made with it. Coca Cola would spend the million dollars more for sugar if they had no sales as a result of using HFCS. Free enterprize...supply and demand.

Check your labels, and just say NO.
