Default Whip out your DNDR books - carbs in nuts

Hi Guys - on page 174 (poer of five) it says 30g macadamias should be counted as 5 grams carbs, but fitday counts it as 1 (fibre removed), this seems to apply for all the nuts he lists - it seems he's forgotten to subtract the fibre from them, all the other foods listed on that page are correct tho. What gives? How should I count my nuts??

Personally - I find a lot of the "net carb" calculcations to be very troubling. For instance, I noticed that Mana Lua just CHANGED their fiber calculation on the bottle. They used to be 1netg per serving - now it is 2. That's a big change.

I tend to discount this stuff a lot unless I"m dealing with raw fiber (like Fibre one or All-Bran) or Flax/Soy combos. I think there's too much incentive to game the system.

Hi
I looked up 8 medium asparagus on Fitday and the after-fiber count is 3...whereas pg 174 says it's approximately 5. The carb gram counter with the perforated edge that's in the front of my book says that 6 spears has 3.8 grams. I have always followed Fitday and I managed to lose weight just fine, so my assumption would be that on pg 174, he listed full count carbs, not net carbs.

Confusing isn't it??

Hmmm....y'know it is true. The South Beach diet guy makes the point that net carbs weren't generally understood/accepted when Dr. A wrote his book.

Dr. Atkins wrote in the OWL Chapters that nuts are limited to 1 ounce, with the exception of cashews which are limited to 1/2 ounce. So forget about the net carb counts when it comes to nuts and follow the 1 ounce (1/2 ounce for cashews) rule.

You're so smart! Thanks for pointing that out.

I love the way he spells out exactly how many nuts an ounce equals. It's fun counting 24 almonds out; I did that with raspberries too - had them worked out to net carbs per berry - what a spazz. It works for me, that's all.

Has anyone checked the Corinne Netzer book? Hers are usually pretty accurate, but I don't have my copy here in the US. I find that between Fitday and Sparkpeople and even the USDA there tend to be a lot of deviation on a wide variety of foods. On days I track in Fitday and Sparkpeople, I can very as much as 200 calories and 5 carbs by the end of the day. So I tend to track on fitday because it is less forgiving.

I have used Corinne Netzer's books for years. As far as I can see, the online Atkins carb counter seems to copy Netzer's counts almost exactly.
