| The reason for induction being strict is to teach your body to switch from burning carbs as its primary fuel to burning fat. Atkins is a high fat diet. That's the reason you can have heavy cream...it's high in fat. Beer isn't allowed until rung 5, if then, because of the alcohol. Your body will burn it instead of fat, so wine or other spirits are preferred to beer. I don't know about vanilla extract. Bell peppers have 3.5 carbs per 1/2 cup. Berating yourself for little mistakes does nothing but waste time and energy and erodes your resolve to take good care of yourself. What's done, is done. Let it go. Would you be mad at a friend if they ate 1 too many carbs? I doubt it. Learn to treat yourself with the same respect you would give to someone else because you deserve it as much as they do. Good luck and keep posting. |

The rules are strict on Induction for a variety of reasons. The first is to bring you back to the basics and re-teach you to eat from scratch. Atkins Induction menu is really very pure, so far as it goes. It cuts out *everything* and brings you back to square one. When playing baseball you don't start at 2nd base and run back to first, right? Crystal Light is artificial and it has sweeteners. You're allowed three servings of sweetener a day and you're to avoid aspartame. Beer- What's in beer again? Are it's ingredients on the allowed foods list for induction? - Nope. They're not. If it were just about the carb count, why can't we eat 1/100th of a Snickers bar?! - It's not just about the carb count. It's about WHAT the carbs consist of and where they come from. And Dr. Atkins said so. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Quote:
Vanilla Extract- Natural vanilla extract has a miniscule amount of sugar. Unless you're drinking it straight from the bottle....you're not getting squat for sugar out of it. I'm not sure what "mock cake" is, but I can't imagine that you're adding 1 tsp of vanilla extract for *a single serving*. If it's 8 servings, then that <1 *naturally occurring carb (unless it's from alcohol in the extract) is divided by 8. See what I mean? Heavy cream is almost exclusively fat. The carb in heavy cream is from lactose - which is again, naturally occurring. Heavy cream consumption is also *Limited* to less than 1oz a day. Bell peppers: Yellow- 1.5 per oz, Green- 1.5 per oz, Red- 1.2 per oz. The rules are in place for a reason. Follow them and you'll be successful! It really does work.

On-Going Weight Loss Phase is the second phase of Atkins. It's purpose is to continue losing weight while expanding your food choices. It also helps you learn how to eat for your body and how foods affect your body. These two things will help you maintain your goal weight. Alcohol is not allowed during Induction Phase. It is a food you may add during OWL Phase. Just be aware that your body will burn alcohol before it will burn fat, protein or carbs, so your weight loss will be put on hold while your body is busy getting rid of the booze. Quote:

| BODY,.aolmailheader {font-size:10pt; color:black; font-family:Arial;} a.aolmailheader:link {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:visited {color:magenta; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:active {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;} a.aolmailheader:hover {color:blue; text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal;}*I didn't ask the second question on this thread. I know why people stay on Induction. I wouldn't ask that. I would ask though. Since I am confused. So if I pick up a product lets say Ham and it says 2 grams of sugar per serving. That's okay to eat? You see when I did this the first time around. I always stayed on induction. except I drank vodka on weekends. I wouldn't put anything in my mouth that even had >1 sugar rating. It had to say 0 or it wasn't going in my body. So basically, once I am in Ketosis (which I am in now) I can drink. I am plenty strict have have enormous will power to not combine cheating with drinking. |

Honestly- if you can't give up the booze for the first 5-7 weeks, perhaps the food isn't the biggest issue? I'm not saying that to be snarky or mean, and I apologize if it comes off that way, but that's how long it would take - at it's fastest- to climb to the rung where alcohol is allowed on plan. 5-7 weeks. Why don't you try following the Atkins plan and see what happens? It isn't eating 0 carbs and drinking when ya hit ketosis!

| Bake a ham? I'm a male. I stay out of the kitchen. So when ordering cold cuts, how do I go about knowing which ones have sugar and which ones don't? What will 2 grams of sugar do to me? I live in Las Vegas and am 32 years old and single? I work in an industry where all the big clubs call me on a daily basis and offer me a free table and bottle? How do you expect me to go 7 weeks without drinking? I may need to switch diets. ugggg |

| Some people can drink alcohol and not have it affect their weight loss. And others can't. Dr. Atkins said it was because for some people, yeast problems interfere with their weight loss and alcohol potentiates those yeast problems.

| There's a number of reasons and since I've been a member of this board, here are the ones I can tell you. 1. They think Induction is the entire Atkins Diet. 2. They think they can lose "faster" if they stay on Induction. 3. They keep falling off the diet with cheats here and there so they never leave Induction phase because they're constantly "starting over" and they keep "going back" to Induction to "get back into ketosis." 4. They are too lazy to move to On Going Weight Loss phase because Induction is simple to do and it doesn't take much thought to do it. 5. They think they have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss because they lost "only" 10 pounds during Induction.
