Ya know... I have been overweight since I was a baby. I have the chubby baby pictures to prove it. I have never been thin. Not once. Never. I have dieted probably on average of 3 times a year for 20 + years, succeeding and then failing. But, I have never given up and this past year has been my biggest success ever and I am on my way to my goal weight. I have family and friends that aren't even paying attention this time because I have done this so many times they just naturally assume I will fail. They used to be very supportive, but now it is the "girl who cried diet." I don't think about them anymore or their support. I am doing this for me. You have to do this for you. Do yourself a favor and don't call yourself names and put yourself down. Just do the best you can! Don't give up! One of my favorite quotes... "You don't drown by falling in the water, you drown by staying in!" You just have to be strong and keep trying and keep trying and keep trying. Figure out what works for you and what makes it a way of eating that is livable and workable for you. I have had to re-invent my menu many times to get it to a place where I really enjoy the things I am eating and am satisfied while still following the way of eating. You can do it!!! Just tell yourself you can do it!!!

Never quit, you know when your at your weakest point your actually at your your closest point. The first victory will allow you to call on that memory, and before you know it you'll have victorious moments to call on. The bible says we must die to the flesh daily!

Even a drip of water over a long period of time will make an indentation on a stone. Please don't overlook the small beginnings.

nothing worth having is easy.
Only you can decide what to eat. If food has this power over you, then you need to really question why it is. Sounds alot like an addiction. Most of us on here have an addiction to carbs in one way or another, otherwise we wouldn't be here.

So, you can choose to fight it. Make the smart choice to beat it. That is what makes us human, the ability to rationalize and make choices.

You can do it. Just put your mind to it. You will be stronger every time you win the battles!!!

This is very sound advice!!!

Even though the encouragement is for someone else, those words ring so true for me and probably for so many on this board.

I think you have to sit down and figure out WHY you can only last 4 weeks on Atkins....

Do you move to OWL Phase on Day 15? Or do you stay on Induction phase?

Do you eat the same menu over and over and over again? Or do you try different foods and different ways of preparing them?

Have you developed coping skills for stressful situations (ex. bad day at work, fights with loved ones, etc.)?

Have you developed "Plan B" for those times when we find ourselves at the mercy of a restaurant or a friends house?

I honestly know how it feels to give up and go back to old eating habits.

But all I can say is that you are the only one who can make the decision to lose this weight. Heck, it took me three tries on Jenny Craig, and countless times on low-calorie diets to finally realize that I needed to re-evaluate my life and what was causing me to quit for so long. I realized that I was an emotional eater. I fixed a few wrongs in my life and no longer feel the need to go to food, I go to a journal or a friend or family member. If you TRULY, TRULY want this, you need to realize that the junk food is just NOT worth it. Yes, it may taste amazing at times, but look at all the grief it has caused you. From one yo-yo dieter to another: Atkins works. At least on this diet you don't feel so deprived. Hello!? Steaks for dinner? Hells yeah! Please try again, for yourself, and don't look at it so much as a "diet", but a new beginning. The new you...

Although we may go to (bad) food for emotional support, it is truly the enemy.

Please don't hesitate to PM me if you are feeling low. I've totally been there.

Your post is full to the gills of the "reasons" why you fail. Just look at the negative self-talk! Every sentence that you write and believe about yourself will become a self-fulfilling prophecy! "Whether you think you can do a thing, or you think you can't, you are right!" You CAN do Atkins and you CAN stick with it!

You need to work on your self-image before trying to change your life. Asking God's help is the first step. Think about the ugly things you are saying about yourself, God's beautiful child. No one has ever been motivated to change for the better, while being battered relentlessly with abusive words or actions.

I just posted an article about just this subject. I will post the pertinent parts here as well.

This is a fantastic article about how our minds and negative thoughts throw a monkey wrench in our plans to lose weight and become fit. I have been a long time member of the “Positive Self-Talk Club.” One of my favorite quotes reads, “Whether you believe you can do something or believe you can’t, you are right.”

I so often hear people say while doing Atkins, “I can’t ______” or, “I never could _______” or, “Since I’ve already __________, I might as well throw in the towel.” Or, “I tried, but I can’t______.” You fill in the blanks with your personal excuses.

I even had several doctors helping me make excuses for both not exercising and going on a diet. One of the people quoted in this article, Diane Whaley of UVA in Charlottesville, helped me sneak around to find out just what exercise I could do with my chronic and incurable disorder.

If I had followed those doctors’ orders, I would still only be walking short distances with quad-canes or worse. I would be bedridden most of the time and would probably weigh 400 pounds. Lucky for me that I am stubborn and determined, so the best way for me to get back up on my feet is for someone to tell me I can’t do it. My response: “Hide and watch!”

Changing Your Mind Can Change Your Body, Too

Destructive thoughts can wreck your workout efforts, experts say

Jacqueline Stenson, MSNBC

The first step in charting the right course to fitness is to recognize how your thoughts are undermining your exercise plan.

JANUARY 13, 2009

Change your mind, and you just might change your body, too. Psychologists say our “self talk” or “internal dialogue” can make or break a fitness routine.

The problem is that many people simply aren’t aware of how destructive their thoughts are, says Gareth Dutton, a psychologist at Florida State University in Tallahassee who specializes in helping people to exercise and lose weight.

“The thing that precedes your behavior is a thought, and we sometimes aren’t good at getting in touch with our thoughts,” he says. “We’re on autopilot.”

The first step in charting the right course to fitness is to recognize how your thoughts are undermining your exercise plan, says Dutton. The second step is to challenge the negative thinking – and there’s certainly no shortage of that when it comes to exercise.

Playing mind games

The key, Dutton says, is to remember that “a thought is just a thought. It doesn’t mean it’s reality.” In other words, just because you think you hate everything about exercise doesn’t mean you can’t find some activities that are more tolerable than others. Likewise, just because you think you absolutely have to eat that piece of pumpkin cheesecake (easily canceling out the calorie burn of your workout) doesn’t mean that you really do.

It can be tough for beginners to master the skills necessary to adhere to an exercise plan, but give it time, advises Diane Whaley, an associate professor of sport and exercise psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and a spokesperson for the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. “If you can stick it out for six months, it starts to become a part of who you are versus what you do,” she says. “You have more of an identity as an exerciser.”

Plus, you’ll probably see some positive results that can motivate you to keep at it. Among them: better muscle tone, feeling stronger and more fit, weight loss, improved mood and better sleep.
