The ingredients I've underlined are not allowed:
chicken, water, beef pork, salt, corn syrup. Contains 2% or less of: mustard, dextrose, natural flavors, sodium nitrite, garlic powder and chicken broth.
Corn syrup and dextrose are forms of sugar, which is why they are not "legal". And the sodium nitrite... here's something about it:
Sodium Nitrite helps prevent the growth of Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism in humans and is also used alone or in conjunction with sodium nitrate as a color fixative in cured meat and poultry products (bologna, hot dogs, bacon). During the cooking process, nitrites combine with amines naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. It is also suspected that nitrites can combine with amines in the human stomach to form N-nitroso compounds. These compounds are known carcinogens and have been associated with cancer of the oral cavity, urinary bladder, esophagus, stomach and brain.

At a glance, I dont like the look of the corn syrup.

Well, the reason I am asking is that I understand that some of those ingredients are not preferrable but I just wanted to hear some responses on different people thoughts on it. The thing is, my wonders are this.... if ingredients ending in -trose and similar affixes are frowned upon, do you guys still eat items that contain them on occassion or never? Cause even if they are sugars in a sense and a carb, eating too much protein is converted into the same. Is that correct? And if you are trying to, for example, limit your carb intake under 20g a day, wouldnt eating some of that as long as you still keep the carb count down be acceptable or no? I mean, isnt it akin to eating plain beef but over eating it? I mean, lets say you didnt over eat, of course, but one day you had say... beef only. Basically you had zero carbs. And then lets say you saw an item like these sausages and needed a quick snack. And clearly you saaw the ingredients weren't the best choice. But since your total carb count for the day was so minute, would you figure that eating a can was acceptable or no?

    Thoughts?

Well, thinking this way, one could eat a pound of bacon and 5 teaspoons of sugar (~20 g), and say (s)he's doing Atkins. It's not all about counting carbs; only on WW you count points without caring where those points come from. Atkins is about learning to make healthy choices. This is why you should eat three cups of veggies a day, even during induction. This is why you should choose unprocessed foods rather than processed ones. The first chapter in DANDR explains this extremely well and, imo, one cannot do Atkins successfully (i.e. maintain weight loss) without understanding the basic principles behind it.

You should not be eating "too much protein" in the first place. Atkins is a high-fat "diet", not a high-protein one.

As to whether I am eating stuff that contains sugar or nitrites, the answer is "no". I don't eat sugar because I care about the quality of the carbohydrates I eat, not only about the quantity**. And I don't eat nitrites from the same reason why I avoid by all means high fructose corn syrup.

** Here's something about different types of carbohydrates. Not really Atkins, but parallel to it.
Good carbohydrate foods are those that are still in their natural state, or they are still similar to their natural state. They are foods that have not been processed or altered by people or machines.

Good carbohydrates are generally high in fiber. Foods high in fiber will give you energy over longer periods of time. They also give you a sense of feeling full. Foods that are high in fiber help to lower cholesterol levels, as well as aiding the body in toxin removal.

Good carbohydrates generally have a low glycemic index. Foods with a low glycemic index will not cause a spike in blood sugar. This is especially important for diabetics who have to constantly monitor their blood glucose levels.

Good carbohydrates are nutritious. Good carbohydrates are rich in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

Bad carbohydrate foods are those that have been refined and processed. These foods are not in their natural state. Most of the nutritional value has been removed from these foods.

Sorry, but it's not the same thing at all. Sugar and white flour foods and other forms of sugar such as corn syrup and dextrose are immediately pumped into your system, causing a blood sugar spike, which calls for a shot insulin to handle, sometimes overwhelming your system (insulin resistance). This in turn causes cravings for more sugar when the sugar spike plummets.

Turning excess protein into glucose is a long, complicated process and not immediate. You don't get a blood sugar spike from meat, especially fatty meats.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

i appreciate the input. I have read the book, a couple times for that matter but it has been a couple years. I will go back and reread parts of it.

The one thing about this site that bothers me is when people assume too much. Asking questions doesnt mean I'm lost. Just means I'm looking for clarification. Well, no reason to get into that. Nevermind.

According to many on here, I should go read the book, its all there. So why come to the forum and ask any questions? Thats why I dont come here much.

I am asking these questions for input in order to make adjustments in my thinking. Thanks for the help.

BTW- Since meat is clearly stated in the book as a food choice. what are your recommendations as to the best food to be eating which are high in fat and low in protein? If you eat ground beef, for example, doent it contain a larger percentage of protein than fat? Is there a better meat choice?
