lowcarbHK is on a distinguished road
Question Will atkins eventually work?

Hi everyone, I have just finished my 3rd week of induction and have only lost 1 kg. I am very active and exercise everyday......3 days a week i train 2 hrs and the other 4 are 1 hr sessions. I am 1.72cm (5"7) and weigh 57.5kg, i would like to drop 1 dress size (approx 3-4 kg).
I also decided to make the change and eat low carb because i am trying to overcome a sugar addiction (jelly beans are my weakness, i would easily eat 3 X 250g bags a day!). I have read the book and i know i don't have much weight to loose, but i thought i would have lost more weight than this............

This is a typical sample of a daily meal:
Breakfast - 2 poached eggs, 2 slices of bacon (no sugar), green tea with splenda.
Snack - green tea (no splenda), 2 oz blue cheese
Lunch -1 C chicken, 1.5 C lettuce, 2 Tlb dressing (1gm carb), diet coke
snack - green tea, 1 oz blue cheese
dinner - pork rissoles & 1.5 cups lettuce, 2 Tbl spoons dressing (1 carb), 1 oz blue cheese, green tea with splenda
I have just added sugar free jello and 2 Tbl spoon cream for dessert in the last 2 nights.
I am drinking at least 3 L water a day. I do feel better about cutting out the sugar, but i still would like to loose the weight before April. Can anyone help me with my menu??? Should i be seeing results yet???

one thing i know, for me, is that a reason i lose much slower than everyone is #1 i'm Insulin Resistant and #2 before I decided to go low-carb I was eating "healthy" meaning I wasn't a person that ate junk food day after day and changing to a low-carb diet wasn't a DRASTIC change for my body.

I think, at least for me, those are the reasons I'm not losing nearly as fast as everyone else. It's not like I'm SHOCKING my body into something it's not used to because I also used to exercise just as much as I do now - that's not something that has changed either...

One thing I do see is you may not be getting enough fat in your diet. Something I'm learning on atkins is that you absolutely NEED to eat fat in order to LOSE fat. Google it and you'll find why.
but that is the basis of atkins is eating FAT. use the daily plate at livestrong.com or use fitday.com (both are free) you should be eating 65% of your calories per day from FAT. 30 % from protein and 5% from carbs.
If you use fitday, you'll be able to see the percentages - if you use the daily plate (like i do) you'll have to calculate it yourself (not that hard to do, once you have the formula).

Also - you may be eating too much lettuce and not enough carby vegees. I know that's something else that I myself have to try and overcome. I LOVE salads - but lettuce is dense in calories and carbs...and being that we're only allowed 2 - 3 cups of vegees - I can guarantee you that 1.5 cups lettuce + another 1.5 cups lettuce is NOT enough carbs for the day of our allowance and the other 15 or so carbs you'll need for the 15-20 carbs would have to come from cheese or meat or elsehwere - and while this IS a lowcarb diet - we NEED those carbs from vegees.

and - if you MUST have your salads (i LOVE salads) use spinach instead of lettuce as it's much better for you, nutrient wise, and has a few more carbs.

good luck!!!!!

I agree - if you add more veggies, you will likely see a drop in weight in a couple of days. It caused a stall for me by dropping down in veggies. I just couldn't seem to get them all in because the appetite seems to go away.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you want to lose about 8 pounds, or 4 kg, and you've lost 2 pounds, or 1 kg. I'd say you're right on track. You've lost 25% of your excess weight.

I have to agree with Miss Phode here, The good doctor said that we should expect to lose 10 percent of our goal and you have done that. Have you tried on a size smaller dress?? Very often on this plan we lose inches while the pounds seem to hang on. If you have some tight jeans try them on

I agree with Miss Phode and Desertthorn... you're doing very well indeed. You typically should lose between 5% and 10% of the weight you need to lose in two weeks of induction, so you're A ok!

Also... the less you have to lose, the slower the losses. Sad but true.
