| I get like that at the start of induction. At the end of the two weeks, it's all cleared up. I think it's just your body's way of getting toxins out though the pores, and not something you need worry about After all, you'll find your hair, nails and skin in a much better condition than before!

| Meat today is toxic. Toxins are not leaving your body they are entering your body because your digestive system was designed to handle large amounts of fiber. That is why your small intestine is 25 feet long. Today's meat is loaded with chemicals and hormones. This is not the kind of meat out forebearers ate. This is not even the meat your grand daddy ate. I am convinced that IBS and colon cancer is caused by meat especially red meats. Most commercially raised beef calves start around 80 pounds and gain up to 1,200 pounds in a period of about 14 months. This is not a natural event. This is accomplished by feeding them large quantities of grain (usually corn) and protein supplements, in addition to various drugs and synthetic hormones, as the beef industry puts it, to “promote efficient growth.” Various combinations of hormones, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, and the synthetic hormones, zeranol and trenbolone acetate, may be given to cattle during their growing cycle. Another hormone, melengesterol acetate, may also be added to cattle feed to “improve weight gain and feed efficiency.” When humans eat this drug and hormone-tainted beef, measurable amounts of hormones are transferred to humans. Some researchers warn that human consumption of estrogen from hormone-drugged beef can result in cancer, premature puberty and falling sperm counts. I suspect your hormones are out of balance from the meat. |

| It is the toxins leaving your body through the body's largest organ, the skin. It will get better faster if you shower off your skin often, especially after sweating. If the toxins stay on the skin, they can be reabsorbed. HardRuler--if meat causes IBS and other intestinal disorders, why did I completely ameliorate my IBS, diverticulitis, H-pylori-induced ulcer and leaky gut syndrome by doing very strict Atkins? Lots and lots of meats. I didn't even like meat when I started Atkins, and ate very little. I had all these medical problems before starting Atkins and forcing myself to learn to like meat. I rid myself of all these medical maladies and lost over 120 pounds (which I gained eating low fat, low protein and high carbohydrate) by eating MORE meat than I ever have in my life. I eat more meat in a week now than I did in a month before Atkins. Have you ever heard of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)? This diet is almost identical to Atkins. Quote:

| Wow, Sunny you look amazing! What an achievement! While I do agree that I don't like the hormones and antibiotics that go into our livestock along with their unhealthy diets, I don't think that is what is to blame for a breakout. I have had mild acne since I was 13 and it has cleared up considerably since starting Atkins though I did have a breakout right after induction. I'd say that it is probably hormonal. Your hormone levels change pretty quickly once you're reducing your insulin response. I'd assume that any sudden hormonal change could trigger a breakout. I'm not terribly knowledgeable about these things though so take my interpretation with a grain of salt. I'd limit the artificial sweeteners though. I just really don't like them even if Splenda is Atkins-legal. Also, if you don't think you're getting enough water, chances are you aren't. Start keeping track and see what your normal water intake is. I definitely have to remind myself to drink more. |

So many people attack the Atkins WOE as unhealthy. Nothing could be further from the truth! They are basing their judgement upon rumors and misinformation. They think that all we eat is meat, cheese, and eggs. If they would take the time to educate themselves about the plan, they would understand that the Atkins eating plan emphasizes the benefits of protein and natural fats - AND nutrient-rich carbohydrates. Although Dr. Atkins was one of the first to draw attention to the dangers of too many carbs - and the wrong ones - the Atkins WOE (way of eating) is NOT anti-carb. The crux of the matter is in limiting carbohydrates and in selecting the right carbohydrates, those most full of nutrients and fiber and those with the lowest impact on your blood sugar. So, not only is it important to choose foods with low carb counts, it is also crucial to select the most nutrient-dense carbohydrate foods. The goal is to eat as many "good" carbohydrates as your body can tolerate without interfering with weight loss or getting your blood sugar out of whack. You will control carbohydrates, not eliminate them. And you will choose healthy, satisfying whole foods, ones that provide nutrients and fiber. Your answer implies that we don't get any fiber in our way of eating. I ALWAYS get a minimum of 25g of fiber a day, and it's not unusual for me to get much, much more than that... I have eaten as much as 55g of fiber in a day. Perhaps you should read the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution... that is the book that this board is based upon. |

| Indeed, I'd venture to guess that most people get more fiber while doing Atkins than they got before starting. That might not be true at induction levels but the legal veggies during induction contain lots of fiber. I know I'm probably getting more fiber now than ever before! |

| Even on induction we are to eat 6 servings of vegetables and fruits, and then we can eat avocado in addition to the 6 servings. This is as restricted as Atkins gets.

| I would just like to state for the record (hardruler) I, as well as many other people I know have been guided to the Atkins WOE by THEIR DOCTOR. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think if this WOE was "bad" for you, that so many Doctors would recommend it. I'm not sure you're intent for visiting this site but I agree with SunnySmile that "People who say it can't be done should NOT interrupt those doing it" Maybe I am out of line, and apologize if I am but I alone do not appreciate the negative posts coming from a certain someone. As for me, Atkins has been a lifesaver. The only thing that has worked. Thank God for that. Mjlamhan, on a light note, Your blemishes will go away. Give it time. Increase your water intake. The way I look at it is.....a few pimples is worth the joy you feel when you step on the scale and see that it has actually gone down instead of up!! Good Luck to you and stay positive!! You're doing great!
