Talking "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

I was in the grocery store this morning and read the label of "Sugarfree" Cool Whip.

Here's the break-down

20 cals per 2 tablespoon serving
0 grams fat
0 grams protein
1 gram carbohydrate
0 grams sugar

Ingredients: Water, corn syrup, hydrogenated oil (and I didn't read the rest.)

There was a disclaimer about the corn syrup: "Adds a trivial amount of sugar."

I have to admit there is no "sugar" listed in the ingredients, but corn syrup is still a type of sugar!

So beware folks, be very aware!

Oops...that should be 3 grams carbs, but 0 grams sugar (because corn syrup isn't sugar......)

Megs, I'm glad that you posted this. I have noticed this very thing on many products, lately. Hmm... Sugar-free, and yet, it contains corn syryp.

I remember when Joy was having so much trouble losing some stubborn pounds. And then one day, she saw the person filling the "unsweetened" tea container and was able to read the label it came from. It had corn syryp in the ingredients label. She had been drinking a lot of that tea. She stopped, and was able to drop those pounds.

REMEMBER TO READ THE INGREDIENTS LABEL, PEOPLE!!!

Default Re: "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

this is very frustrating to me - especially whipped cream and sorts.

I make my own jello with unsweetened kool-aid but i can't use cool whip or even redi whip cuz it's got corn syrup and/or hydroginated oils.

one thing, though - that REALLLLLY burns me that they put corn syrup in is MEAT!!!!!!!
Now I know most sausage is processed - but i look at sausage links and SO many has corn syrup!! it makes me angry that they put corn syrup in meat!
grr.

k. thanks! lol

Default Re: "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

That "sugar free" Cool Whip has been burning me since I first started Atkins! I was with eDiets at that time, and we were told that it was okay to eat the "sugar free" Cool Whip. I was a part of a group of Atkinseers that was doing "whole foods" as much as possible.

There was a big discussion about whether it was okay to eat or not, so I went to the grocery store to check it out. I brought the results back to prove that it was not okay. It has more calories and carbs than the original.

I have made it my goal in life never to buy or support in any way any company that "hides" sugar or MSG in any way behind deceptive wording. The companies that hide sugar by calling it evaporated cane juice should be put out of business. Evaporated cane juice is table sugar. A pig by any other name...

All the sausages I looked at today had corn syrup in them and very high in the ingredient list.
Yes that is a good reminder Megs that sugar free is a very interesting claim.
Diet Orange Crush used to have HFCS in it. Still may. I just have not checked lately

Putting aside the sugar-in-sausage issue for a moment, the sodium nitrite in most of them makes the sugar issue look like nothing. I wondered why Dr. A recommended nitrite-free bacon/sausage/meats, etc, and after I read up on it, my eyes were opened.

Default Re: "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

Another deceptive practice started when they were forced to list ingredients in the order of most to least. Some programs, like WW, tell you to look at the label, and if sugar is fourth on the list, then it is okay to eat.

So....the food industry changed their recipe or in some cases, just changed what they called "sugar" to break it up so it would no longer be the first or second ingredient on the list. They started breaking it down by listing sugar, dextrose, corn syrup, HFCS, brown sugar, molasses and so on, individually, so the total was divided up into smaller quantities and appear farther down the list.

I need to go meditate to get my blood pressure back down!
