Lightbulb Question about Atkins Shakes..

This is my 4th week on back Atkins. I did Atkins before back in 2004-2005 and lost 100 pounds almost reaching my goal...sadly I put it back on in the course of 3 years due to Extremely poor eating habits. I kinda forgot how I achieved my success and went backwards.

Well now I am deteremined to get this weight off again and keep it off. I noticed from reading some of the posts that people discourage drinking Atkins shakes. Well, I have to say that I remember from before that the Shakes really helped me...you see I sometimes don't like to eat breakfast or lunch which I know is bad. So instead I will drink Atkins shakes for one of my meals...back then they had the shake mix which was 15 times better than the already made shakes.

Anywayz, so why are the shakes such a no no..even on induction? It says they are acceptable in every phase. I pretty much stayed on extended induction the whole time I was on Atkins before, and it was never a problem. ...

I don't know the particulars but I know for me, they cause stalls. I do have one on occasion, if I am really pressed for time, but I prefer to have real food.

I know that a few of the mods will give you a much better answer

Default Re: Question about Atkins Shakes..

I'd go with no shakes...ESPECIALLY on induction. It's not food. I try to never lean toward the lesser evil when consuming something in order to fuel my body. Yes, I'm sure the Atkins Kingdom does say they're ok for all phases. I might tell you that too if I was a greedy CEO at the helm. They're not good. I don't have any here. I MIGHT drink them in case of an absolute emergency, like trapped in an emergency room with only vending machine options but that's it. They're full of junk your body doesn't need and certainly isn't craving. You'll feel your absolute best and have the best results when you're eating whole nutritious foods. When you cook a recipe, the ultimate result is what you pull out of the oven. That end result has everything to do with the ingredients you used to get the result. It's the same with your success on this WOE. You have to decide if you're going to go all in OR just give it a whirl. My opinion is, it sure would be a h*ll of a lot of EFFORT for just a whirl. I'm going all in and taking everything I believe is MINE for the taking!! Fresh foods! Exercise! Water! Rest! If you're right on the mark with the ingredients, your results will be delicious!! Continue to chase your goals even when you think you're not losing. Pay the price and this WOE will always pay you back! You CAN do this!!

I would use them only in emergency situations especially during a weight loss phase... maybe some people can handle them, my body cannot... I myself am in the maintenance phase and LOVE the idea of having a shake for a meal (i know, i know, I'm probably just lazy) I used to do the slimfast shakes all the time pre-atkins... well I figured since I reached my goal and had made my way through the rungs the atkins shakes would be ok for lunch a few days a week... I did that for about 2 weeks and hmmmm thought maybe I shrunk those hot skinny jeans of mine a bit... weighed myself and GASP i had gained 6 pounds in that 2 week period , was not TOM and this was not normal... the shakes were the only thing I had changed in my diet and exercise pattern... went off them and poof back to normal, bye bye 6 lbs -the skinny jeans look great - just my personal experience... for myself and my body they are the devil

They have made me stall. I started induction 17 days ago at 150 lbs. I am 5'9''. The first week I ate nothing but meat cheese and eggs, a little spinach and lost down to 142, the next week I added atkins shakes and sugar free jello. By the end of day 17 I was 151. : ( They are liars at Atkins inc. I think it is a ploy to get more money, because it is definately not for induction.

Red face Re: Question about Atkins Shakes..

Thank you all for your feed back. Back when I did atkins before I never drank the already made shakes ( I think they are kinda nasty )...back then they had the mix you put in water. Maybe it was different/better, unfortantely they discontinued the mix. SO I decided I am not going to take a chance in stalling or hindering my weight loss. Thanks again!

you need to eat the amount of veggies listed on the rules of induction not just a little spinach along with meat and cheese. The sugar free jello is made with aspartame = Dr Atkins said Splenda was the acceptable sweetner. If you are on maintenance and your body can handle the shakes and bars in a pinch I guess they would be ok -- but the book says we are to eat real food, not processed foods.

Since Dr. Atkins death the corporation is a money maker only - the wife is not a doctor, she is a businesswoman - she wants to sell product, she's not in this for our health. Trying to keep up with other brand names to make that all mighty dollar. I'll keep my money and prepare my own food for my health. My opinion.

If you wait until the dairy rung, you can add whey protein into your diet and make your own. I get unflavored whey protein powder and add ice, berries, a splash of cream and water in my magic bullet to make a little shake. It may not be as convenient as the prepackaged shakes or mix, but I can control exactly what is going into it. It doesn't stall me and its great for when I just really can't bring myself to eat anything.

Peej - how much whey protein do you put in the blender? Do you have a favorite brand?

I just put one scoop and no I don't have a favorite brand. I do my shopping at lots of different places and they all carry different brands so I just get whatever is available when I am running low. I kind of just wing it.
